Wastegate Solenoid: Testing and Inspection

1.

Perform self diagnostic output check (refer to COMPUTERIZED ENGINE CONTROLS), call up output code 4442.

Frequency valve should operate on a 50% duty cycle. An audible "clicking" noise should be heard from valve. If not, disconnect electrical
connector and connect LED test light to harness side connector. Repeat output check. LED should flash (if connected with proper polarity). If
LED flashes but valve did not operate (no "clicking"), replace wastegate frequency valve. If LED does not flash when output code 4442 is
called up, check for open or grounded circuit between valve and ECU. If no wiring problems are found, but there is still no duty cycle signal
from ECU when output code 4442 is called up, then ECU is faulty.

With ignition turned off, disconnect vacuum hose between valve and intake side of turbocharger, at the turbo.

Blow into hose.

No air should pass through valve.

4.

Briefly energize valve by applying battery power to one terminal and grounding the other, while blowing into disconnected vacuum hose.

Air should pass through valve when energized.

 
If valve does not operate as described, replace valve. If valve checks out OK, but there is no turbocharger boost, check turbocharger mechanical
condition and see TEMPERATURE SAFETY SWITCH under INPUT DEVICES AND CIRCUITS. Also check wastegate valve for sticking in the
open position and check exhaust system for restriction. If turbo is overboosting, check for grounded circuit between wastegate frequency valve and ECU.
Also check wastegate valve for sticking or binding in the closed or near closed position.
