Ignition Power Stage: Testing and Inspection
Engines With One Knock Sensor

    It is not necessary to test the power output stage unless there is no spark from ignition coil or spark is intermittent. If there is no spark from ignition
coil, check engine speed sensor and crankshaft position (reference) sensor first. If both of these sensors check out OK, then proceed with power output
stage check.
 

1.

Disconnect harness connector from power output stage.

2.

Connect LED test light between terminal #1 of harness connector (Grn/W wire) and engine ground.

3.

Ground terminal #2 of harness connector (Brn/W wire) to engine, using jumper wire.

 
CAUTION: Be sure test connections are correct according to wire color codes. Incorrect test connections (grounding the wrong wire) will damage the
ECU.
 

4.

Crank engine and observe test light.

LED should flash (trigger signal from ECU).

 
If not, check for:
 

a. Open or grounded circuit between ECU terminal #22 and power output stage harness connector terminal #1.
b. Open circuit between ECU terminal #2 and power output stage harness connector terminal #2.
c. Faulty hall sensor (see HALL SENSOR in this section).

 
Repair as necessary.
 
If hall sensor is OK, no wiring problems are found and LED still does not flash in step 4, then the ECU is faulty (no ignition trigger signal from ECU).
 
If LED does flash and there is no spark, check ignition coil (refer to IGNITION SYSTEMS).
 
If ignition coil checks out OK and there is still no spark, replace power output stage.
