On models equipped with airbags, disable airbag system, refer to MAINTENANCE PROCEDURES/AIRBAG ARMING & DISARMING.

Disconnect battery ground cable.
3.
Ensure wheels are in a straight ahead position, then remove airbag unit (horn pad) torx head bolts from left and right side of steering wheel, Fig. 8.

Tilt airbag unit backward carefully, then lift up safety clamp and disconnect electrical connector from airbag unit, Fig. 9.

On 1992 100 models, remove airbag from vehicle and store face up (Audi rings pointing up) in a safe place. Do not expose airbag unit to
excessive heat (above 212°F) or place near anything that may puncture it.
6.
Pivot steering column telescoping lever downward, pry off spring clip using a suitable screwdriver, then remove lever.
7.
Loosen set screw for column tilt lever, then remove lever.
