Suspension Strut / Shock Absorber: Service and Repair

1.

Remove strut cover, then the nut from shock absorber.

2.

Mark position of spring strut mounting, then remove mount.

3.

Turn steering so that piston rod of shock absorber is aligned in center of upper spring retainer, then insert a suitable piece of wood between spring
and wheel housing to hold in position.

4.

Attach bearing plate retaining tool 2070/1 or equivalent, to shock absorber piston, then tighten spindle until seated.

5.

Tighten tool-plate mounting nuts, then the spindle nut until seated.

6.

Raise and support vehicle, then remove wheel and tire assembly.

7.

Press off tie rod end.

8.

Remove caliper mounting bolts and caliper, then suspend caliper from body with wire, leaving brake lines connected.

9.

Remove brake disc.

10.

Remove ball joint clamp bolt.

11.

Remove stabilizer bar clamps on both sides.

12.

Remove ball joint from hub by prying down on control arm.

13.

Remove three tool-plate attaching nuts while holding suspension strut from below.

14.

Pull strut off of axle shaft.

15.

Clamp strut in a vise.

16.

Pull boot off cover, then loosen spindle nut, while holding spindle.
