1.
Engine must be cold (below 20°C/68°F), and coolant temp sensor must be good.
2.
Connect a duty cycle meter (VW 1367 or equivalent) to the two terminal duty cycle test connector (located near the right strut tower) Fig. 13.
3.
Unplug the coil wire from the distributor cap and ground it.
4.
While cranking the engine, duty cycle should be a constant 80%.
5.
If duty cycle is not within specification, replace the control unit.
6.
If the duty cycle is OK, but car has difficulties with cold starting, check the cold start valve, and the idle control system.
