Servicing rear wheel brake, drum brake
Removing and installing brake shoes

Special tools and workshop equipment required

  • ◆ Hook 3438

Removing

  • ‒ Remove brake drum => Removing and installing rear brake, 46-22.
  • ‒ Remove wheel hub with wheel bearing.

=> Running gear, FWD; Repair group 42; Servicing wheel bearings; Removing and installing wheel bearing/wheel hub unit

  • ‒ Remove spring plate with spring.
  • ‒ → Lever out the brake shoes behind the lower support plate -A- in direction of arrow.
  • ‒ Set the brake shoes aside on the lower support plate.
  • ‒ Disengage lower return spring.
  • ‒ Detach brake shoes.
  • ‒ Disengage handbrake cable.
  • ‒ Clamp brake shoes in vice.

  • ‒ → Remove tension spring -1- for wedge -2-.
  • ‒ Remove upper return spring -3- using special tool 3438.

  • ‒ → Release locating spring -1- using special tool 3438.
  • ‒ Remove the push rod -2- and the wedge -3- from the brake shoe.

Installing

  • ‒ → Engage locating spring -1- in the push rod -2- using special tool 3438.
  • ‒ Insert the wedge -3- at the same time.

Installation position:

The raised area -arrow- must remain visible when installed.

  • ‒ Insert brake shoe with brake lever in push rod.

  • ‒ → Engage return spring -3- using special tool 3438.
  • ‒ Engage tension spring -1- for wedge -2-.
  • ‒ Position brake shoes on pistons of wheel-brake cylinder.
  • ‒ Engage handbrake cable at brake lever.

  • ‒ → Engage lower return spring and lift brake shoes onto lower support -A-.
  • ‒ Engage tension spring for wedge.
  • ‒ Insert compression spring with spring plate.
  • ‒ Install wheel hub with wheel bearing.

=> Running gear, FWD; Repair group 42; Servicing wheel bearings; Removing and installing wheel bearing/wheel hub unit

  • ‒ Install brake drum.
  • ‒ Firmly press brake pedal once.
  • ‒ Adjusting handbrake =>Page46-39.
