Checking electric additional heater
Checking electric additional heater
  Note
t  In the case of vehicles with an electric additional heater, the air is supplied with heat energy immediately after it exits the heat exchanger of the air-conditioner / heater.
t  Vehicles with a 1.2 l TDI engine (except for 3 L Öko for Germany with exhaust emissions standard “D 4”) are currently fitted with an electric additional heater rated at approx. 900 watt capacity. Production changeover to the electric additional heater rated at 1500 Watt capacity will not apply to the 2003 models of these vehicles. This will happen at a later date (implementation is as yet undecided). → Audi sales range
t  Vehicles with a 1.2 litre TDI engine with exhaust emissions standard “D 4” (3 litre Öko for Germany) do not feature an additional heater at present.
t  An electric additional heater rated at approx. 900 watt capacity was installed in vehicles with 1.4 l TDI engine (only in vehicles for “non-cold countries”, e.g. Italy, Spain, etc.) up to 2002. There is a running production changeover to the electric additional heater rated at 1500W capacity in models from 2003. → Audi sales range
t  On vehicles with 1.4 L TDI engine for “cold countries” up to model year 2002 (e.g. Austria, Switzerland and all countries northward from there) no electric additional heater was or is installed. These vehicles are fitted with a fuel-powered additional heater which supplies additional heat energy to the coolant. → Audi Sales Range → Additional heater.
t  An electric additional heater rated at approx. 1500 watts will be installed as a running change in vehicles with 1.4 l TDI engine for “cold countries” in models from 2003. The fuel-powered additional heater will no longer be used on these vehicles once this fuel-powered additional heater is implemented.
t  No additional heater is currently provided in vehicles with a petrol engine.
t  The heating elements for the electric additional heater are actuated by the engine control unit; check → Relevant Workshop Manual, Diesel Direct Injection and Glow Plug System; Repair group 01 and → Current flow diagrams, Electrical fault finding and Fitting locations
t  On vehicles without an air conditioner (only with a heater) the Econ button was discontinued from 2003 (implementation of the 1500 Watt additional heater, fuel-powered additional heater is no longer used on all vehicles). On these vehicles the electric additional heater can no longer be switched off by the driver.
t  Theoperating and display unit for air conditioner/Climatronic -E87- / heater control electronics actuates the engine control unit, which then decides whether the additional heating is to be switched on. Depending on the engine control unit version, different measured value blocks of the engine control unit indicate why the additional heater is not switched on or that it is being actuated. → Relevant Workshop Manual, Diesel Direct Injection and Glow Plug System; Repair group 01
t  The engine control unit receives an additional heating request:
t  On vehicles with an air conditioner via the data bus system (convenience data bus and drive data bus)
t  On vehicles with heater via wiring from the heater control electronics to the engine control unit (the input in the heater control electronics is switched to earth). On vehicles without an Econ button in the heater controls, this engine control unit output is always switched to earth. → Relevant Workshop Manual, Diesel Direct Injection and Glow Plug System; Repair group 01 and → Current flow diagrams, Electrical fault finding and Fitting locations
t  The electrical additional heater is actuated by the control unit for the diesel direct injection and glow plug system when certain conditions occur at the same time: → Relevant Workshop Manual, Diesel Direct Injection and Glow Plug System; Repair group 01
t  The engine control unit switches on the additional heater if e.g. the following preconditions are met:
t  The operating and display unit for air conditioner/Climatronic -E87- transmits a request via the convenience data bus, or the heater control electronics have switched the input to earth (the Econ button is not pressed, the ambient temperature is below 6 °C).
t  Engine speed greater than 600 rpm
t  The coolant temperature is less than 70 °C (or less than 80 °C at very low ambient temperatures).
t  The load of the alternator -C- is less than 60% (only with electric additional heater rated at 900 watts). → Relevant Workshop Manual, Diesel Direct Injection and Glow Plug System; Repair group 01
