Fault table
Fault table
  Note
t  All the possible faults detected by the operating and display units for air conditioner/Climatronic -E87- and displayed on the vehicle diagnostic, testing and information system -VAS 5051- when the content of the fault memory is interrogated are listed below on the basis of the fault codes.
t  The content of the fault memory is retained until it is erased → Chapter.
t  Sporadic faults are marked “/ SP” on the display.
t  With all sporadically occurring faults, pay particular attention to the possibility of loose contacts in the connectors.
t  If defective components are detected when the fault memory is read out, also use the current flow diagram to check the wiring to the components for short circuits and open circuits. → "Current Flow Diagrams, Electrical Fault-Finding and Fitting Locations"
t  Check the appropriate plug contacts before replacing a component.
t  Before replacing the operating and display units for air conditioner/Climatronic -E87-, also check the voltage supply and the earth connections: → Current Flow Diagrams, Electrical Fault-Finding and Fitting Locations
t  If the operating and display units for air conditioner/Climatronic -E87- remains in operation after the ignition has been switched off; check the wiring for the operating and display units for air conditioner/Climatronic -E87-, connector “D”, contact “10”, for a “short-circuit to positive”.
t  Always perform the basic setting (function “04”) after replacing an air conditioner/heater component. Then read out the fault memory, rectify any faults displayed and erase the fault memory (functions “02” and “05”).
t  The display is switched from “°C” (Celsius) to “°F” (Fahrenheit) and vice versa by actuating the “Temperature +” button when the “Recirculated air” button is pressed.
t  Check the cooling output of the air conditioner → Chapter
t  If during one driving cycle the compressor output was limited 30 times due to high pressure in the refrigerant circuit, e.g. due to an intermittent electrical fault, then the air conditioner compressor regulating valve -N280- is no longer actuated, and the compressor is switched off as a result. The compressor can be re-actuated by pressing the “Compressor on” button or by switching the ignition off and on again.
t  If a potentiometer fault is detected in one of the air distribution positioning motors, air distribution can be influenced by pressing the buttons on the operating and display units for air conditioner/Climatronic -E87-.
t  If a fault is detected in the temperature control and no fault is displayed:
t  - Check that the temperature sensors (senders) are correctly installed.
t  - Check if the wiring to the sunlight penetration photosensor -G107- has become interchanged.
t  - Check the function of the temperature sensor blower -V42- (installed in the operating and display units for air conditioner/Climatronic -E87-).

No fault detectedIf no faults are detected despite complaints about the electronic climate/heater control, perform “Final control diagnosis 03” and “Read measured value block 08” functions and check the encoding of the operating and display units for air conditioner/Climatronic -E87- and of the control unit in the dash panel insert -J285- → Note → Chapter

1)  In this vehicle the encoding is performed in the control unit in the dash panel insert -J285- and is transferred to the connected vehicle systems via the convenience data bus; the encoding which is currently valid is displayed in the measured value block → Chapter. There is no facility at present for direct code input into the operating and display units for air conditioner/Climatronic -E87- (however, this feature may be introduced for optional extras at a later date). → Electrical System; Repair group 01
