Removing and installing suspension strut
Removing and installing suspension strut
–  Lift vehicle far enough to take weight off front wheels.
–  Remove hexagon socket nut from drive shaft with 19 mm hexagon key, e.g. Hazet No. 985.
–  Remove wheel.
   
–  Remove bolt for coupling rod -1- from wishbone -2-.
–  Unscrew nut from swivel joint.

–  Apply ball joint puller -3287 A--1- as shown in the illustration and press out swivel joint.
  Note!
Take care not to damage rubber boot when inserting ball joint puller.

–  Press out drive shaft.
  Note!
Ensure sufficient clearance when pressing out drive shaft.
–  Remove drive shaft from wheel bearing housing and tie up.
–  Re-connect swivel joint to wheel bearing housing.
–  Position engine and gearbox jack -V.A.G 1383 A- under wheel bearing housing.
  N40-0056
–  Detach wire -1- for speed sensor from suspension strut -2-.
–  Remove bolts and nuts securing wheel bearing housing/suspension strut -arrows-. Note installation position of bolt. Threaded ends of bolts point in direction of travel.
–  Pull wheel bearing housing sideways off shock absorber until shock absorber tube is free.
–  Tie up wheel bearing housing to suspension bracket/subframe with wire.
–  Remove engine/gearbox jack -V.A.G 1383 A- from under wheel bearing housing.

Unscrew hexagon bolts -arrows- for upper shock absorber mounting and take out suspension strut.
