Lift vehicle far enough to take weight off front wheels.

Remove hexagon socket nut from drive shaft with 19 mm hexagon key, e.g. Hazet No. 985.

Remove wheel.
–
Remove bolt for coupling rod -1- from wishbone -2-.
–
Unscrew nut from swivel joint.
–
Apply ball joint puller -3287 A--1- as shown in the illustration and press out swivel joint.
Note!
Take care not to damage rubber boot when inserting ball joint puller.

Press out drive shaft.
Note!
Ensure sufficient clearance when pressing out drive shaft.

Remove drive shaft from wheel bearing housing and tie up.

Re-connect swivel joint to wheel bearing housing.
–
Position engine and gearbox jack -V.A.G 1383 A- under wheel bearing housing.

Detach wire -1- for speed sensor from suspension strut -2-.
–
Remove bolts and nuts securing wheel bearing housing/suspension strut -arrows-. Note installation position of bolt. Threaded ends of bolts point in direction of travel.

Pull wheel bearing housing sideways off shock absorber until shock absorber tube is free.
–
Tie up wheel bearing housing to suspension bracket/subframe with wire.

Remove engine/gearbox jack -V.A.G 1383 A- from under wheel bearing housing.
Unscrew hexagon bolts -arrows- for upper shock absorber mounting and take out suspension strut.
