While rotating the adjusting screw, resistance must be felt.

Attach a dial gauge with 0.001 graduations as depicted in the illustration.

Adjust the dial gauge to 1 mm pre-tension.

Remove the boot on the steering pinion side from the steering gear housing.

Rotate the steering rack with the torque wrench ( VAG 1332) set to 40 Nm and the open end wrench insert (VAG 1923) on the tie rod. When
torque wrench (VAG 1332) disengages, set dial gauge to "0".

Remove torque wrench (VAG 1332) from tie rod.

Check the value displayed on the dial gauge.

If the value differs from the specified value, not the following: 

The adjusting screw must always be rotated to the left first and then back to the right. This ensures the thread tooth flanks lie against each other
without play.

Example

The measured play is too small.

Loosen the adjusting screw 4 graduation lines to the left and then 1 graduation line back to the right.

The measured play is too large.
