Connecting fault reader V.A.G 1551 and selecting engine electronics control unit

A01-0001

Note:

Vehicle system tester V.A.G 1552 can be used instead of fault reader V.A.G 1551. However, printouts cannot be made.

Test conditions

  • ● Battery voltage at least 11 V.
  • ● Earth connections on engine and gearbox OK.
  • ● Fuse OK.
  • ‒ → Unclip cover for diagnostic connections.
  • ‒ Connect fault reader V.A.G 1551 or vehicle system tester V.A.G 1552 with cable V.A.G 1551/3.

→ Display readout:
V.A.G - SELF-DIAGNOSIS    HELP
    1 - Rapid data transfer
    2 - Flash code output

Note:

If using V.A.G 1551 and test cards with program levels from -D/5.0- onwards the engine control unit can be selected directly via "Rapid data transfer". The self-diagnosis function can be used with program levels from -D/5.4- onwards.

Note:

If the display remains blank:

=> Fault reader operating instructions

Depending on the function required:

  • ‒ Switch the ignition on.
  • or
  • Start the engine , table "Available Functions".
  • ‒ Switch on printer with the Print button
    (warning lamp in button lights up).
  • ‒ Press key 1 for "Rapid data transfer".

→ Display readout:
Rapid data transfer     HELP
Enter address word    XX

→ Press keys 0 and 1 for address word "Engine electronics" and confirm entry by pressing the Q key.

→ The display on fault reader V.A.G 1551 will show one of the two possible control unit identification codes. For example:
06A906019D    SIMOS 2    HSXXXX⇒
Coding 0000    WSC XXXXX
  • ◆ 06A 906 019 D = Part No. of the control unit (for latest control unit version, see Parts List)
  • ◆ SIMOS 2 = system designation and version
  • ◆ HSXXXX = programme level number for manual gearbox
  • ◆ ATXXXX = programme level number for automatic gearbox
  • ◆ Coding 00000 = coding variant
  • ◆ WSC = workshop code

→ Or:
06A906019D    1.6l R4/2V SIMOS HS D01 ⇒
Coding 00000    WSC XXXXX
  • ◆ 06A 906 019 D = Part No. of the control unit (for latest control unit version, see Parts List)
  • ◆ 1.6 ltr. = engine capacity
  • ◆ R4/2V = engine type (in-line engine, 4-cyl., 2 valves per cylinder)
  • ◆ SIMOS = designation of injection and ignition system
  • ◆ HS = manual gearbox (hand shift)
    AT = automatic gearbox
  • ◆ D = data level (hardware and software versions) of control unit
  • ◆ Coding = coding variant of control unit
  • ◆ WSC = workshop code

If the coding differs from the vehicle version, then:

  • ‒ Check control unit coding => Page 01-57.
    Coding Simos control unit
  • ‒ Press the ⇒key.

→ Display readout:
Rapid data transfer     HELP
Select function XX

Note:

Press the HELP key to obtain a printout of the available functions.
