Special tools and workshop equipment required
   
t  Torque wrench -V.A.G 1331-
  W00-0427
t  Piston resetting appliance -T 10145-
Removing
Mark brake pads when removing if they are to be reused. Reinstall in their original position to prevent uneven braking.
–  Unbolt both front wheels.
  W00-1309
–  Unplug connector -1- of brake pad wear indicator at left brake.
–  Remove protective caps.
  N46-0263
–  Unscrew guide pins -arrows-.
–  Detach brake caliper and tie up with wire.
  Note
Brake hose/line must not be twisted or kinked.
–  Remove brake pads.
  Note
Mark brake pads when removing them if they are to be reinstalled. Reinstall in their original position to prevent uneven braking.
Installing
Installation is performed in reverse sequence; note the following:
–  Clean brake caliper.
Use only methylated spirits to clean the brake caliper housing.

–  Press piston back.
  Note
Before inserting new brake pads, press piston back into cylinder with resetting appliance. Before pressing the piston back, draw off brake fluid from the reservoir with a bleeder bottle. Otherwise, fluid can overflow and cause damage, particularly if reservoir has been topped up.
  WARNING
Brake fluid is poisonous and must NOT be drawn off by sucking through a hose.
–  Insert brake pads, paying attention to installation position:
  A46-10042
t  Pad with large three-prong clip -1- facing piston
t  Pad with small three-prong clip -2- (black) facing outside of brake caliper
  A46-0231
–  Starting at bottom, attach brake caliper with brake pads to wheel bearing housing.
t  The projection -arrow- of brake caliper housing must be behind guide of wheel bearing housing
  WARNING
After installing the brake pads, depress pedal firmly several times with the vehicle stationary, so that the brake pads are properly seated in their normal operating position.
–  Check brake fluid level and top up if necessary.
