Notes on auxiliary heater
  Note
t  Different versions of the auxiliary heater are available. Observe the exact allocation when renewing an auxiliary heater → Electronic parts catalogue.

t  Refer to the rating plate of the heaters to identify the version.
The most important technical data entered on the nameplate are as follows (example):
t  Approval marks for heater and radio interference suppression of heater
t  Heater type “Thermo Top V” (TT-V)
t  Operating voltage and power input (in full load mode) of auxiliary heater e.g. “12 V/ 42 W”
t  Max. flow of warm air (max. heating output in full-load mode) “5.0 kW”
t  Type of fuel: “diesel” or “petrol”
t  Permissible operating pressure (in cooling system) 2.5 bar
t  Country of manufacture, article number, model, serial no. and year of commissioning of auxiliary heater
  Note
t  The “V” in the type designation “Thermo Top V” stands for “Venturi nozzle”. This type of auxiliary heater employs the Venturi principle to mix the fuel with the combustion air.
t  The air is blown by the combustion air blower -V6- into the combustion chamber via a pipe with constriction. The air speed increases at the constriction, and the fuel emerging from the fuel injection tube (“Venturi nozzle”) is entrained, which produces a swirl effect.
t  The year of initial commissioning is to be entered/marked beneath the technical data on the rating plate.
t  It must be possible to identify the year of initial commissioning on both rating plates (nameplates, original on auxiliary heater and duplicate in engine compartment). These nameplates are available as replacement parts → Electronic parts catalogue
  A82-0463
t  A second rating plate (duplicate) is attached in the engine compartment (e.g. at bonnet or front-end module). If there is any doubt about the type of auxiliary heater installed, always observe the rating plate attached to the auxiliary heater itself and the part number of the auxiliary heater control unit -J364- displayed in the “Guided Fault Finding” function → Guided Fault Finding function of vehicle diagnostic, testing and information system VAS 5051.
t  Vehicles with diesel engine and “auxiliary heater” optional extra are currently also fitted with an additional electric heater element → Audi sales programme. On vehicles with an additional electric heater, the auxiliary heater is currently not activated as an “additional heater”. Therefore it is important to observe the adaption of the auxiliary heater control unit -J364- → Guided Fault Finding function of vehicle diagnostic, testing and information system VAS 5051.
t  On vehicles with diesel engine and “auxiliary heater” optional extra which are not fitted with an electric additional heater (not currently intended), auxiliary heater is activated as “additional heater” → Audi sales programme. Therefore it is important to observe the adaption of the auxiliary heater control unit -J364- → Guided Fault Finding function of vehicle diagnostic, testing and information system VAS 5051.
t  Vehicles with diesel engine and without auxiliary heater are currently fitted with an additional electric heater (heat energy is added to air flow immediately after exiting from heat exchanger of air conditioning unit) → Audi sales programme and → Heating, air conditioning; Rep. Gr.87.
t  If auxiliary heater is to be renewed, read out coding and adaption of auxiliary heater control unit -J364- via “Replacing control unit” function in Guided Fault Finding (auxiliary heater control unit -J364- is fitted in heater) → Guided Fault Finding function of vehicle diagnostic, testing and information system VAS 5051.
t  Before handing over new vehicle with auxiliary heater to customer, check operation of auxiliary heater and run heater in full load mode for at least 10 minutes. There may still be remnants of factory lubricant for example in or on auxiliary heater components and these would evaporate following initial activation on becoming hot. The resultant smoke could give customers cause for concern and possibly lead them to think that there is a fault in the auxiliary heater.
t  This auxiliary heater is available with the same part number, but with different indices for Audi and VW; when renewing auxiliary heater, observe correct index of part number → Electronic parts catalogue. If an auxiliary heater which is intended for a VW vehicle is installed in an Audi A3, the operation of the auxiliary heater can be impaired (due to different software functions) → Guided Fault Finding function of vehicle diagnostic, testing and information system VAS 5051.
t  From model year 2009 onwards, some components in the installation area of the auxiliary heater are modified; the modification of these parts means that certain components of the auxiliary heater, such as the air intake silencer, must also be modified. To distinguish the different versions of the auxiliary heater, the part number of the entire auxiliary heater unit (auxiliary heater with bracket, exhaust system etc.) is then changed from 1K0 xxx xxx to 8P0 xxx xxx. The auxiliary heater itself is currently not affected by this modification → Electronic parts catalogue.
