Removing and installing operating and display unit, Climatronic control unit -J255-
  Note
Different versions of the operating and display unit, Climatronic control unit -J255- depending on production period, equipment and vehicle model. Pay attention to the correct assignment. If this is not OK, fault memory entries may be made and complaints may be received about air conditioner regulation → Chapter (installation periods of the various versions of the operating and display unit, Climatronic control unit -J255-) and → Electronic parts catalogue.
Removing
–  Interrogate the encoding and adaption of the operating and display unit, Climatronic control unit -J255- by way of the „Control unit replacement“ function in the guided fault-finding routine (if the operating and display unit, Climatronic control unit -J255- is to be replaced) → "Guided fault-finding" function of vehicle diagnostic, testing and information system VAS 5051.
–  Switch off ignition.
–  Remove the centre console handles if applicable → General body repairs, interior; Rep. gr.68
  Note
There are different versions of the centre console handles (e.g. with and without leather cover). In the case of the version with leather cover, there may not be enough space to remove the operating and display unit, Climatronic control unit -J255- and the handles could be damaged.
   
On vehicles with no radio navigation system or no radio with large control panel
–  Remove the trim -A- beneath the operating and display unit, Climatronic control unit -J255- (at the front in the centre section of the dash panel) and the radio -B- → Radio, telephone and navigation system; Rep. gr.91 and → General body repairs, interior; Rep. gr.68 (removing and installing storage compartments).

–  Carefully lift the connecting link -A- to release the fasteners -B-.

–  Reach from above (and below) into the centre console and release the operating and display unit, Climatronic control unit -J255--C- from the centre console.

On vehicles with radio navigation system or radio with large control panel:
–  Remove the radio or radio navigation system → Radio, telephone and navigation system; Rep. gr.91.
–  Remove the centre console handles if applicable → General body repairs, interior; Rep. gr.68
  Note

–  Remove the trim -B- above the operating and display unit, Climatronic control unit -J255- at the front in the centre section of the dash panel. → General body repairs, interior; Rep. gr.68
  Note
The trim -A- under the operating and display unit, Climatronic control unit -J255- is only to be removed after taking out -J255- → General body repairs, interior; Rep. gr.68 (removing and installing storage compartments).

–  Carefully lift the connecting link -A- to release the fasteners -B-.

–  Reach from above (and below) into the centre console and release the operating and display unit, Climatronic control unit -J255--C- from the centre console.

–  Release the connectors -A- to -D- by pressing the retainer tabs -E- and unplug the connectors.
  Note
t  The operating and display unit, Climatronic control unit -J255- is secured in position in the centre console by means of 4 clips -F- (2 each at top and bottom).
t  In the event of incorrect dash panel temperature sensor -G56- measurements, check the intake grille of the operating and display unit, Climatronic control unit -J255- trim panel (must not be closed off) as well as operation of the temperature sensor blower -V42-.
t  On replacing an operating and display unit, Climatronic control unit -J255-, pay attention to precise assignment (e.g. without or with heated seat control etc.). → Electronic parts catalogue
Installing
Install in reverse order, paying attention to the following:
  A87-0656
–  The operating and display unit, Climatronic control unit -J255--A- on the Audi A3 Cabrio is to be provided as shown with felt strips -B- (dimensions: 30 x 15 x 1 mm) → Electronic parts catalogue.
  Note
The felt strip -B- is bonded onto the area with the rough surface.
–  Following installation, interrogate the event recorder of the operating and display unit, Climatronic control unit -J255- and erase any faults displayed → "Guided fault-finding" function of vehicle diagnostic, testing and information system VAS 5051.
–  Perform air conditioner basic setting, encoding and adaption and if applicable final control diagnosis for the operating and display unit, Climatronic control unit -J255- → "Guided fault-finding" function of vehicle diagnostic, testing and information system VAS 5051.
