Operation of heater controls (air conditioner controls), removing and installing
Heater control unit -J65- on vehicles with no air conditioner
Air conditioning system control unit -J301- on vehicles with manually controlled air conditioner
  Note

t  There are different versions of the heater control unit -J65--A- (air conditioning system control unit -J301-) (with and without heated driver seat regulator -E94- and heated front passenger seat regulator -E95--C-, with different interfaces and rotary controls) → Electronic parts catalogue.
t  Vehicles with a start/stop system and a manually controlled air conditioner are only to be fitted with an air conditioning system control unit -J301- with part no. 8P0 820 047 as of index „D“ → Electronic parts catalogue.
t  Vehicles with a 5-cyl. engine and a manually controlled air conditioner are only to be fitted with an air conditioning system control unit -J301- with part no. 8P0 820 047 as of index „D“ → Electronic parts catalogue.
t  The heater controls (air conditioner controls) consist of the heater control unit -J65--A- (air conditioning system control unit -J301-) and a base plate -B-.
t  There is a different base plate -B- for vehicles with no air conditioner (with an actuator for the Bowden cable to the temperature flap) and with manually controlled air conditioner (no Bowden cable actuator, the temperature flap is moved by way of a control motor) → Electronic parts catalogue. As vehicles with manually controlled air conditioner are not fitted with a Bowden cable to the temperature flap, the rotary temperature control is slightly easier to turn than the rotary air distribution control.
t  The base plate -B- is fitted with a gear mechanism for actuation of the flexible shaft (for air distribution). Due to the gear mechanism at the heater / air conditioning unit and at the base plate of the heater / air conditioner controls, one turn of the switch produces two turns of the flexible shaft → Chapter.

t  The heater controls (heater control unit -J65-) -A- have no event recorder (guided fault-finding not possible) and are not connected to the data bus.
  A80-0241
t  The air conditioner controls (air conditioning system control unit -J301-) -A- are provided with an event recorder (guided fault-finding possible) and are connected to the data bus → "Guided fault-finding" function of vehicle diagnostic, testing and information system VAS 5051.
  A87-10275
t  With certain versions, the two rotary controls -A- and -B- are only pressed on and can be detached. Separate replacement is only possible if these can be detached → Electronic parts catalogue.
t  If the two rotary controls -A- and -B- are fixed (and cannot be detached), it is not possible to replace individual components of the heater control unit -J65- (air conditioning system control unit -J301-) or the lamps (LEDs = light-emitting diodes) for button and rotary control illumination separately.
t  The rotary controls and buttons of the heater controls (air conditioner controls) are illuminated by way of terminals „58 s“ and „58 d“. On vehicles with no air conditioner, these two terminals are connected directly to the heater control unit -J65- → Current flow diagrams, Electrical fault finding and Fitting locations. On vehicles with manually controlled air conditioner, the switching status and the voltage of these two terminals are interrogated by the air conditioning system control unit -J301- via the data bus → "Guided fault-finding" function of vehicle diagnostic, testing and information system VAS 5051.

t  The function indicator lamp in the fresh-air/air recirculation button -F- of the heater controls is supplied with voltage via terminal „58d“.
t  As of Model Year 2010 a start/stop system will be available as an optional extra for this vehicle in conjunction with certain engines. On vehicles with a start/stop system, the seat heating is deactivated whilst the stop function is active (by the onboard supply control unit -J519- to protect the battery -A-). Once the engine has been re-started via the start function, the seat heating is actuated again → "Guided fault-finding" function of vehicle diagnostic, testing and information system VAS 5051.
t  Functions of heater controls (heater control unit -J65-) → Chapter
