Renewing flange shaft oil seal (right-side) - two-piece oil seal and sleeve l  → Chapter „Identification of flange shaft oil seals (right-side)“ Special tools and workshop equipment required

t  Assembly tool -3253/2-

t  Engine support -3300 A-

t  Support -T10036-

t  Thrust piece -T10160-

t  Used oil collection and extraction unit -V.A.G 1782- Removing

–  Remove noise insulation (centre) by releasing fasteners -1 ... 3-.

–  If fitted, unbolt heat shield for drive shaft (right-side) -arrows-. –  Unbolt drive shaft (right-side) from flange shaft → Running gear, front-wheel drive and four-wheel drive; Rep. gr.40.

–  Remove bolts -1 ... 3- and detach pendulum support.

–  Unbolt heat shield for power steering control unit -J500- from subframe -arrows-.

–  Drill two 7 mm diameter holes in support -T10036-, as illustrated (if holes have not already been drilled). l  Dimension -a- = 11 mm l  Dimension -b- = 98 mm l  Dimension -c- = 70 mm

–  Bolt support -T10036- onto subframe -arrows- using two M6 × 20 bolts.

–  Bolt engine support -3300 A- onto support -T10036-. –  Move drive shaft clear towards the rear as far as possible. –  Using spindle of engine support, push engine forwards just far enough to give a small amount of clearance between flange shaft and drive shaft -arrow-. Pay special attention to the following points: l  Alternator should only make light contact with refrigerant pipe. l  Air conditioner compressor should only make light contact with refrigerant pipe connection. –  Place used oil collection and extraction unit -V.A.G 1782- underneath.

–  Remove securing bolt -arrow- for flange shaft. To do this, screw two bolts into flange and counterhold flange shaft with suitable lever. –  Pull out flange shaft together with spring, thrust washer and tapered ring.

–  Lever out oil seal using a screwdriver -A- (support screwdriver on assembly tool -3253/2-).   Note t  Do not damage sleeve, otherwise leaks will occur. t  Renew sleeve if damaged → Fig.

Installing –  Lightly oil outer circumference of new oil seal. –  Pack space between sealing lip and dust lip -arrow- half full with sealing grease -G 052 128 A1-.

–  Drive in new oil seal onto stop (take care to keep oil seal straight).

–  Install flange shaft. –  Press flange shaft in against spring on gearbox housing and secure with countersunk bolt -arrow-. Tightening torque → Item –  Bolt drive shaft to flange shaft → Running gear, front-wheel drive and four-wheel drive; Rep. gr.40. –  Detach engine support -3300 A- and support -T10036-.

–  Install and secure heat shield for power steering control unit on subframe -arrows-. –  If originally fitted, bolt on heat shield for drive shaft (right-side).

–  Fit pendulum support with new bolts -1 … 3- in accordance with installation instructions → Anchor. Tightening torques → Chapter –  Check oil level in gearbox and top up with gear oil if necessary → Chapter. –  Install noise insulation under engine/gearbox → General body repairs, exterior; Rep. gr.50. Tightening torque
