Removing, installing and checking thermostat Special tools and workshop equipment required

t  Hose clip pliers -V.A.G 1921-

Removing   Caution Observe notes on procedure for disconnecting the battery → Rep. gr.27. –  Disconnect earth wire at battery with ignition switched off. –  Remove engine cover panel -arrows-. –  Drain off coolant → Chapter.

–  Detach coolant hoses -1- and -2-.

–  Remove bolts -4- and detach connection -3-, O-ring -2- and thermostat -1-. Installing Installation is carried out in the reverse order; note the following:   Note Renew O-ring. –  Clean and smoothen sealing surface for O-ring as required. –  Insert thermostat. l  Installation position: Cross-piece on thermostat should be vertical. –  Coat new O-ring with coolant. –  Connect battery. Procedures required → Rep. gr.27. –  Fill cooling system → Anchor. Tightening torque

Checking thermostat –  Heat up the removed thermostat in hot water.
