The generation 1 steering box was introduced with the launch of the Audi A3 2004 ►. It was replaced by the generation 2 steering box in model year 2004. Vehicles equipped with a generation 1 steering box can be converted to generation 2.
Determine the type of steering box (remaining in its installed position) by counting the number of bolts on the steering pinion cover.
–  Raise the vehicle.
   
–  Turn steering wheel to left and right and count number of bolts -1-.
The illustration shows a generation 1 steering box.
The bearing cover of the steering pinion on a generation 1 steering box is secured with -4- bolts.
The bearing cover of the steering pinion on a generation 2 steering box is secured with -2- bolts.
