Activating and deactivating auxiliary heating/ventilation > < Activating and deactivating auxiliary heating/auxiliary ventilation by way of control unit in dash panel insert J285
Requirements
Requirements
l  The auxiliary heater is adapted in the control unit in dash panel insert -J285- (adaption is performed at present in adaption channels “18” and “61”). Checking and performing adaption → Electrical system; Rep. Gr.01 and → "Guided fault-finding" function of vehicle diagnostic, testing and information system VAS 5051.

l  The auxiliary heater can only be switched on by the control unit in dash panel insert -J285- and the “Heating on” function can only be activated if there is sufficient fuel in the fuel tank. With the ignition switched on, the fuel gauge -A- must not be in the “red zone”. Depending on the version of the control unit in dash panel insert -J285-, it may still be possible to activate the auxiliary heater by way of the “Immediate heating” function but not using the “Timer” function and remote control.
l  There must not be any faults stored in the auxiliary heater control unit -J364-.
l  The battery -A- must be adequately charged.
l  There must not be any faults stored in the vehicle data bus system.

l  The “Auxiliary heating/ventilation” function -B- must have been entered by way of the “Adaption” function in the control unit in dash panel insert -J285- (adaption is described in the guided fault-finding for the control unit in dash panel insert -J285- → "Guided fault-finding" function of vehicle diagnostic, testing and information system VAS 5051).
l  With the ignition switched on, the “Adjustment” menu -A- in the driver information system provides access to the “Auxiliary heating/ventilation” function -B-.
The control unit in dash panel insert -J285- can only exchange data with the auxiliary heater control unit -J364- by way of the convenience data bus system if the control unit has been appropriately adapted (at present, the numerical value “32768” for the auxiliary heater must be added to the sum total of the control units in adaption channel “61”) → Electrical system; Rep. Gr.01 and → "Guided fault-finding" function of vehicle diagnostic, testing and information system VAS 5051.
  Note
t  At present, settings are to be made in the control unit in dash panel insert -J285- in the “Adaption” function (adaption channels “18” and “61”) for auxiliary heating/ventilation → Electrical system; Rep. Gr.01 and → "Guided fault-finding" function of vehicle diagnostic, testing and information system VAS 5051.
t  Setting in adaption channel “61” (fitting list for convenience equipment) → Electrical system; Rep. Gr.01 and → "Guided fault-finding" function of vehicle diagnostic, testing and information system VAS 5051
t  Settings in adaption channel “18” (auxiliary heater, control unit in dash panel insert -J285-)

CodeSignificance of display in adaption channel "18"
     "Auxiliary heating/ventilation" function
    0No auxiliary heater fitted
–  No “auxiliary heating/ventilation” display in driver information system
    1Auxiliary heating/ventilation fitted
–  Following engine operation, ON signal for auxiliary heating/ventilation remains active until set operating time has elapsed (factory setting)
–  After engine operation, auxiliary heating/ventilation can however be deactivated by the auxiliary heater control unit -J364- (even if ON signal is still being transmitted by control unit in dash panel insert -J285-) → Chapter
    2Auxiliary heating/ventilation fitted
–  Following engine operation, ON signal for auxiliary heating/ventilation is deactivated automatically on switching off ignition (customer-specific setting, e.g. for driving short distances)
“Engine pre-heating” function in auxiliary heating mode
0 “Inclu. engine” does not appear on driver information system display
–  Setting for vehicles with no heater coolant shut-off valve -N279- or for vehicles on which the heater coolant shut-off valve -N279- is not actuated by the auxiliary heater control unit -J364- (the coolant always flows via the engine in auxiliary heating mode) → Chapter
1 “Inclu. engine” appears on driver information system display
–  Setting for vehicles with heater coolant shut-off valve -N279- (the heater coolant shut-off valve -N279- is actuated by the auxiliary heater control unit -J364-) → Chapter
–  If there is no tick against “Inclu. engine” in the driver information system display, the direction of coolant flow in auxiliary heating mode is governed by the coolant temperature in the auxiliary heater → Chapter.
–  If there is a tick against “Inclu. engine” in the driver information system display, the coolant flows (fully or to a certain extent) back to the auxiliary heater via the engine in auxiliary heating mode → Chapter
     Additional functions
000  These zones are not used at present

  Note
If “3” or “4” is entered as last digit (e.g. “00003”), the control unit in dash panel insert -J285- does not actuate the auxiliary heater. Only auxiliary ventilation mode is possible with this setting (operating and display unit, Climatronic control unit -J255- of air conditioner/heater is actuated directly by way of control unit in dash panel insert -J285-).
Example:
–  For vehicles with heater coolant shut-off valve -N279- (on which coolant flow in the small coolant circuit is possible) for which customers request automatic deactivation of auxiliary heating/ventilation after switching off the engine, the control unit in dash panel insert -J285- should be adapted to “00012”.
