Removing and installing selector mechanism Special tools and workshop equipment required

t  Engine and gearbox jack -V.A.G 1383 A-

t  Counterhold tool -T10172- with adapter -T10172/5- Removing –  Remove gear knob together with boot → Chapter. Vehicles with large radio slot: –  Remove operating and display unit for air conditioner → Rep. Gr.87.

Vehicles with small radio slot: –  First lift trim panel -1- in direction of -arrow A-, then pull it out in direction of -arrow B-. All models: –  Unscrew bolts -arrows C- and then pull ashtray -2- out of centre console. –  Unplug electrical connector for ashtray light. –  Remove foam wedges from centre console. –  Lift out the noise insulation.

–  Unscrew noise insulation for selector housing -arrows-.

–  Remove nuts -arrows-.

–  Unscrew bolts -1 ... 4- and remove front cross piece, if fitted.   Note

The flexible pipe connection (de-coupling element) on the front exhaust pipe must not be bent more than 10° – otherwise it can be damaged. –  Disconnect exhaust system at clamps -arrows-.   Note Illustration shows vehicle with V6 petrol engine. –  Disengage rear section of exhaust system at rubber mountings and remove.   Note A second mechanic is required for removing the rear section of the exhaust system.

–  Unbolt heat shield for propshaft -arrows-.

–  Unbolt propshaft from gearbox.

–  Unbolt heat shield -1--arrows-. –  Slide propshaft together towards rear final drive. The constant velocity joints can be moved axially. –  Detach heat shield. –  Move propshaft -2- to one side and tie up onto gearbox.

–  Apply lifting column of engine and gearbox jack -V.A.G 1383 A- to rear cross member from below (place a block of wood -arrow- between lifting column and cross member). –  First unscrew bolts -1- and -2-, then bolts -3- and -4-. –  Slightly lower rear cross member with engine and gearbox jack -V.A.G 1383 A-.

–  Unscrew connecting rod -2- for selector rod. –  Detach push rod -1-; to do so, unscrew hexagon socket head bolt.

–  Unscrew nut -1- and detach selector shaft lever -2- from gearbox selector shaft. –  Remove selector mechanism to rear. Installing Installation is carried out in reverse sequence; note the following:   Note Renew seals/gaskets and self-locking nuts. –  Secure rear cross member to subframe → Rep. Gr.40. –  Secure propshaft to gearbox → Rear final drive 01R; Rep. Gr.39. –  Install exhaust system and align it so it is stress-free → Rep. Gr.26. –  If fitted, install front cross piece → Rep. Gr.66. –  Adjust selector mechanism → Chapter. Tightening torques
