Removing and installing oil pump Special tools and workshop equipment required

t  Used oil collection and extraction unit -V.A.G 1782-

t  Long-nose grip pliers -VAS 6226-

Removing –  Remove sump (bottom section) → Chapter. –  Disconnect coolant hose -1-. –  Unbolt coolant pump -arrows-.

–  Remove drive shaft -arrow- for coolant pump from the oil pump.

–  Place used oil collection and extraction unit -V.A.G 1782- under engine. –  Unscrew bolts and remove oil pipes -1- and -2-.   Note Some oil will come out when oil pipes are removed.

–  Remove bolts -1 … 3- and remove intake pipe together with housing.

–  Press oil pump drive shaft -1- back against spring pressure and hold firmly with long-nose grip pliers -VAS 6226-.

–  Unscrew bolts -arrows- and remove oil pump. Installing   Note Renew seals and O-rings. –  Check whether the two dowel sleeves are fitted in the cylinder block; install if necessary. –  Secure the oil pump -arrows-.

–  Release long-nose grip pliers -VAS 6226- and let drive shaft -1- slide into oil pump.

–  Check to ensure that the drive shaft is positively engaged in the oil pump. Try to turn the oil pump gears by reaching into the opening in the intake pipe -arrow- of oil pump. l  You should not be able to turn the gears. Remaining installation steps are carried out in reverse sequence; note the following: –  Install coolant pump → Chapter. –  Install sump (bottom section) → Anchor. –  Check oil level → Chapter. –  Fill cooling system → Anchor. Tightening torques
