Special tools and workshop equipment required
   
t  Hose clip pliers -V.A.G 1921-
Removing
–  Remove engine: Vehicles with manual gearbox → Chapter; vehicles with automatic gearbox → Chapter.

–  Disengage electrical connectors -2- and -4- for Lambda probes in front exhaust pipe (right-side) from bracket and unplug them.
  Note
Illustration shows electrical connectors when installed.

–  Unscrew bolt -arrow- at bracket for front exhaust pipe (right-side).
  Note
Illustration shows bracket for vehicle with manual gearbox.
  A26-10099
–  Unscrew nuts -1 ... 3- securing front exhaust pipe to exhaust manifold (right-side).
–  Take out front exhaust pipe with starter and main catalytic converter.

–  Remove bolts -1- and -2-.
–  Loosen hose clips -arrows- and detach coolant pipe (right-side) from coolant hoses.

–  Unscrew nuts -1 ... 12- and remove exhaust manifold (right-side).
Installing
Installation is carried out in the reverse order; note the following:

Renew self-locking nuts.
–  Install front exhaust pipe (right-side): vehicles with manual gearbox → Chapter; vehicles with automatic gearbox → Chapter.
–  Install coolant pipe (right-side) → Chapter.
–  Install engine: vehicles with manual gearbox → Chapter; vehicles with automatic gearbox → Chapter.
Tightening torque
  A26-0665

1)  Renew nuts.
