Vehicles with 8-cylinder petrol engine (versions with timing chain)
Special tools and workshop equipment required
t  Hose clamp -3094-
t  Power steering tester -V.A.G 1402-
t  Adapter -V.A.G 1402/2-
t  Hose from adapter set -V.A.G 1402/6- (2x)

t  Drip tray for workshop hoist -VAS 6208-
Test requirements:
l  Belt condition/ belt tension OK
l  No leaks in system
l  Hoses and pipes not kinked or constricted
  W00-10228
Checking
–  Clamp off suction and return hoses using hose clamps up to 25 mm Ø -3094-.
–  Remove noise insulation → Rep. Gr.50.
  A48-0054
The pressure hose is not detached at the power steering pump when checking delivery pressure. Power steering tester -V.A.G 1402- is connected to pipe -arrow- at bottom of engine compartment (left-side).
–  Place drip tray for workshop hoist -VAS 6208- under the union to catch escaping hydraulic fluid.
–  Disconnect pipe connection -arrow-.
  A48-10118
–  Connect power steering tester -V.A.G 1402- as shown.
1 - Pressure hose
2 - Pressure gauge -V.A.G 1402-
3 - Hose from adapter set -V.A.G 1402/6-
4 - Hose from adapter set -V.A.G 1402/6-
5 - Pressure hose
6 - Adapter -V.A.G 1402/4-
–  Screw hose from power steering tester -V.A.G 1402- onto pressure hose.
–  Remove hose clamps up to 25 mm Ø -3094-.
  A48-10119
–  Make sure lever on pressure gauge is in position -2-.
–  Start engine but do not press accelerator.
–  Turn steering wheel approx. 10 times from lock to lock.
–  Switch off engine and top up hydraulic fluid in reservoir if necessary.
  Note
t  To avoid damaging the power steering pump, please note the following points:
t  Cut-off valve of pressure gauge must not remain closed for more than 10 seconds during this test.
t  Start engine without pressing accelerator and leave it running at idling speed.
t  Take pump pressure reading at idling speed immediately after starting engine (have second mechanic take reading).
t  The pressure will drop during the test; take the highest pressure reading as the test value.
–  Then check delivery pressure.
  A48-10121
–  Start engine, close cut-off valve (position -1-) with engine idling and read off pressure (lever must face away from pressure hose). Do not perform measurement for longer than 10 seconds.
Delivery pressure specification: 123…130 bar
Renew power steering pump if specification is not attained → Chapter.
–  Switch off engine.
–  Remove power steering tester -V.A.G 1402-.
–  Connect union on pressure hoses: 40 Nm.
–  Check hydraulic fluid level → Chapter.
–  Check steering system for leaks → Chapter.
–  Bleed steering system → Chapter.
–  Fit noise insulation → Rep. Gr.50.
