Procedure
l  Engine in vehicle.
–  Release fasteners -arrows- and remove noise insulation.
–  Drain off engine oil → Booklet802.

–  Unbolt bracket for noise insulation -arrow-.

Vehicles with air conditioning:
  Caution
If a used belt runs in the opposite direction when it is refitted, this can cause breakage.
Before removing, mark direction of rotation of poly V-belt with chalk or felt-tipped pen for re-installation.
–  Loosen bolts on tensioner for poly V-belt for air conditioner compressor -arrows-, slacken belt and remove.
–  Remove tensioner.

All vehicles (continued):
–  Remove stop for torque reaction support -arrows-.

–  Remove longitudinal strut (left and right) and torque reaction support bracket -arrows-.

–  Cut through cable ties -arrows-. Open retainer for starter wiring and take out wiring.

Vehicles with automatic gearbox:
  Note
Observe rules for cleanliness when working on automatic gearbox → Rep. Gr.37.
–  Unscrew bolt -3- and detach ATF pipes from gearbox.
  Note
Disregard -items 1, 2-.
–  Detach bracket for ATF pipe from engine.
–  Move ATF pipes clear to side.

–  If fitted, unclip actuator rod for vehicle level sender at bottom transverse link -arrow-.

–  Detach air hose from air pipe in lock carrier -arrow-.

–  Mark position of nuts -1- and locating sleeves -2- on bottom of engine mountings (right and left).
–  Remove nut for engine mounting -1- on both sides.

–  Release quick-release fasteners and remove engine cover panel -arrows-.

Different mounting holes are provided for the different engine versions.

–  Position support bracket -10 - 222 A- on bolted flanges of wing panels.

–  Remove lifting eye from lifting tackle -2024 A-.
–  Reinsert pin -1- in centre hole in lifting tackle and secure with split pin.
–  Hook pin of lifting tackle -2024 A- on spindle of support bracket -10 - 222 A-.
–  Engage lifting tackle -2024 A- in front and rear lifting eyes on engine.
  WARNING
Accident risk from loose components of lifting tackle.
The support hooks and retaining pins on the lifting tackle must be secured with locking pins -arrows-.
–  Raise engine as far as possible with spindle of support bracket.
  Note
Do not lift engine to such an extent that pipes or coolant hoses are damaged or strained. Make sure viscous fan does not become trapped. If necessary, remove viscous fan → Chapter and place it towards front into radiator cowl.

–  Support subframe with workshop hoist.

  Caution
Risk of misalignment of wheels.
The subframe should only be unfastened and lowered at the front, as otherwise wheel alignment has to be performed.
–  First remove bolts (front) -2- and -3- for subframe (left and right). Then remove bolts -1-.

–  Vehicles with manual gearbox: loosen nut -arrow- for gearbox mounting (left-side) until it is flush with lower end of bolt (turn approx. 4 threads).
–  Loosen nut -arrow- for gearbox mounting (left-side) until it is flush with lower end of bolt (turn approx. 4 threads).

–  Vehicles with automatic gearbox: slacken rear bolt -2- for gearbox mounting (left-side) several turns; remove front bolt -1- for gearbox mounting (left-side).

–  Lower subframe slowly using workshop hoist.
–  Run out workshop hoist; pivot anti-roll bar downwards.
–  Disconnect oil return pipe for turbocharger from sump.

–  Unplug electrical connector -arrow- at oil level and oil temperature sender -G266-.

–  Remove bolts securing sump to gearbox -arrows-.

–  Remove M10 bolts -arrows-.
–  Slacken bolts -1 ... 18- in diagonal sequence and remove.

Use Allen key, long reach -T10058- to unscrew the two rear sump bolts -1- and -2-. To do so on vehicles with manual gearbox, turn the flywheel -3- until the recess -arrow- is aligned with the bolt.
–  Engines with moulded gasket: take off sump; if necessary loosen it by striking it lightly with a rubber hammer.
–  Engines with liquid gasket: carefully release sump from bonded joint.
