Renewing crankshaft oil seal (pulley end)

Special tools and workshop equipment required

t	Oil seal extractor -3203-

t	Counterhold tool -3415-

t	Assembly tool -T10053-

Procedure –  Move lock carrier to service position → Rep. Gr.50. –  Remove poly V-belt → Chapter. –  Remove toothed belt: vehicles up to 07.2000 → Chapter; vehicles from 08.2000 onwards → Chapter. –  Remove stop for torque reaction support -arrows-.

–  Remove crankshaft sprocket using counterhold tool -3415-.

–  To guide oil seal extractor, screw bolt for toothed belt sprocket into crankshaft onto stop by hand. –  Unscrew inner section of oil seal extractor -3203- one turn out of outer section and lock with knurled screw.

–  Lubricate threaded head of oil seal extractor -3203-, place it in position and screw it into oil seal as far as possible (applying firm pressure). –  Loosen knurled screw and turn inner part against crankshaft until the oil seal is pulled out. –  Clamp flats of oil seal extractor in vice and use pliers to remove seal. –  Clean contact surface and sealing surface.

–  Remove oil residue from crankshaft journal with a clean cloth. –  Fit guide sleeve -T10053/1- onto crankshaft journal.   Note Do not lubricate sealing lip and outer rim of oil seal before pressing in. –  Push oil seal over guide sleeve onto crankshaft journal.

–  Press in oil seal using bolt for toothed belt sprocket and thrust sleeve of assembly tool -T10053- until flush.   Note t  Renew bolt for toothed belt sprocket on crankshaft. t  Contact surface between toothed belt sprocket and crankshaft must be free of oil. t  Do not lubricate bolt for crankshaft sprocket.

–  Install crankshaft sprocket using counterhold tool -3415-. –  Install toothed belt (adjusting valve timing): vehicles up to 07.2000 → Anchor; vehicles from 08.2000 onwards → Anchor. –  Install poly V-belt → Chapter.

–  Install lock carrier with attachments → Rep. Gr.50. –  Allow stop for torque reaction support to rest on rubber buffer for torque reaction support under its own weight and tighten nuts -arrows-. Tightening torques
