Testing individual coil ignition system (AEB engine)
Checking ignition coils
  • ‒ Interrogate fault memory .

Test requirements:

No fault stored relating to the injectors

  • ‒ Unplug the connectors on the injectors with the engine running to establish which cylinder is malfunctioning/misfiring.

Note:

A cylinder that is misfiring or cannot operate can also be detected by comparing the spark plugs (soot on spark plug).

  • ‒ Test spark plug connectors Specified value: approx. 2 kω
If the specified value is not achieved, replace the spark plug connector.
  • ‒ Swap the spark plug with one from a cylinder that is working.
  • ‒ If the fault now occurs at the other cylinder, renew the spark plug.
  • ‒ If the fault occurs on the same cylinder, swap the ignition coil with one from a cylinder that is working.

  • ‒ If the fault now occurs at the other cylinder, renew the defective ignition coil.
  • ‒ → If the fault occurs at the original cylinder again, check the ground wire for the secondary circuit between contact 4a of the connector for the relevant ignition coil and engine ground for an open circuit.
  • ‒ If the ground connection is OK, check the primary wiring and the voltage supply, plus the output stage for the ignition coils
