Checking signal from coolant temperature display sender -G2-
If there is a malfunction of the coolant temperature gauge in the instrument cluster, check whether the signal is present at the instrument cluster.

Special tools and workshop equipment required
t  Hand-held multimeter -V.A.G 1526C-
t  Auxiliary measuring set -V.A.G 1594C-
t  Test box -V.A.G 1598A-
t  Adapter -V.A.G 1598/25-
t  Vehicle diagnostic, testing and information system -VAS 5051B- with diagnostic lead -VAS 5051/5A-

Procedure
l  Vehicle diagnostic, testing and information system -VAS 5051B- with diagnosis lead -VAS 5051/5A- connected, vehicle self-diagnosis and vehicle system “17 - instrument cluster” selected → Electrical system, self-diagnosis; Rep. Gr.01.
  A01-0201
Display on -VAS 5051-:
–  Select function “08 - Reading measured value block” from list -1-.
  A01-0122
Display on -VAS 5051-:
–  Use keypad -2- to enter 3 for “display group 003” and confirm by touching Q key.
1 - Enter display group
  A01-0130
Display on -VAS 5051-:
–  Check readout in display zone -1-.
l  Specification with engine cold: approx. ambient temperature
l  Specification with engine warm: 80 ... 90 °C
If the coolant temperature is indicated, but not displayed on coolant temperature gauge -G3-, the instrument cluster is defective.
–  Renew instrument cluster → Chapter.
If the coolant temperature is not indicated:
–  Remove instrument cluster → Chapter.
–  Connect test box -V.A.G 1598A- with adapter -V.A.G 1598/25- to multi-pin connector, 32-pin, blue.
–  Connect hand-held multimeter to measure resistance between sockets “7” and “8”.
l  Coolant temperature 90 °C: approx. 110 Ω.
l  Coolant temperature 120 °C: approx. 50 Ω.
If reading does not match specification:
–  Check wiring connection between instrument cluster and coolant temperature display sender -G2- according to current flow diagram.
If no fault is found in wiring:
–  Renew coolant temperature display sender -G2-.
