Removing and installing airbag unit (RS 4)
Removing
–  Move steering wheel up and to rear as far as it will go, using full range of steering column adjuster.
  WARNING
Observe safety regulations for pyrotechnic components → Chapter.
–  Switch off ignition.
–  Disconnect the battery earth wire → Electrical system; Rep. gr.27.
   
–  Prise off caps -1- (left and right) on reverse side of steering wheel -arrow-.

–  Unscrew bolt -arrow- (left and right) on back of steering wheel.
–  Turn steering wheel to centre position (wheels in straight-ahead position).
–  Move airbag unit (driver side) slightly away from steering wheel.
  WARNING
Before handling the airbag units (e.g. unplugging the electrical connector) the mechanic must discharge static electricity by briefly touching the door striker plate, or similar.

–  Pull connector locking element -4- as far as stop -arrow-. This will release electrical connector -2- which can then be unplugged.
–  Detach airbag unit -1- from steering wheel.
–  If fitted, unplug electrical connector -3-.
–  Set down airbag unit with impact cushion facing upwards.
Installing
Install in reverse order of removal. Observe the following:
  WARNING
t  Observe safety regulations for pyrotechnic components → Chapter.
t  Before handling the airbag units (e.g. unplugging the electrical connector) the mechanic must discharge static electricity by briefly touching the door striker plate, or similar.
  Note
t  Make sure electrical connectors are fitted correctly (as far as stop) and engage audibly.
t  Make sure that wiring is not trapped.
–  Attach electrical connector for coil connector to coupling for airbag unit at return ring with slip ring.
–  Position airbag unit in steering wheel.

–  Screw in the 2 bolts -arrow- by approx. 2 turns to secure airbag unit.
–  Operate horn three times to ensure an even gap width.
–  Avoid further contact with airbag unit.
–  Tighten bolts -arrow-.
–  Press caps into openings in steering wheel.
–  Switch on ignition.
  WARNING
The battery must be connected with the ignition switched on. If pyrotechnic components (e.g. airbag or belt tensioner) are inexpertly repaired, this may result in unwanted triggering after connecting the battery. There must not be anyone in the vehicle while you are connecting the battery.
–  Connect battery with ignition switched on → Electrical system; Rep. gr.27.
The following operation must be performed after installing the airbag unit.
–  Interrogate and erase the fault memory of the airbag control unit, as disconnecting the electrical connectors may have caused faults to be stored → Vehicle diagnostic tester.
