Special tools and workshop equipment required
t  Vehicle diagnostic tester
   
t  Torque wrench -V.A.G 1331-
  WARNING
Observe safety regulations for pyrotechnic components → Chapter.
  Note
If airbag warning lamp -K75- is illuminated after an accident, use → Vehicle diagnostic tester to check whether crash data have been stored. If this is the case, check whether fault »001 Resistance too high« is stored in the fault memory for battery isolation igniter --N253-. If this is the case, battery isolation igniter --N253- must be renewed.

Removing
–  With ignition switched off, disconnect earth wire at battery → Electrical system; Rep. gr.27.
–  Remove luggage compartment side trim (left-side) → General body repairs, interior; Rep. gr.70.
–  Unfasten quick-release fasteners -1- and -3- and open lid -2- of main fuse box in luggage compartment -arrow-.

–  Unscrew nuts -1- and -3- at positive wires.
–  Take battery isolation igniter -N253--item 2- out of its retainer.
  WARNING
Before unplugging the connector, discharge static by, for example, briefly touching the door striker plate.
–  Unplug electrical connector -4-.

–  To do so, release connector locking element -2- as far as stop using a screwdriver -arrow-. This will release electrical connector -1- which can then be unplugged.
  Note
Observe the notes on the disposal of pyrotechnic airbag units → Chapter.
Installing
  WARNING
Observe safety regulations for pyrotechnic components → Chapter.
Installation is carried out in the reverse order; note the following:
–  When plugging in connector make sure it is properly engaged and locked in place.
–  Observe the specified tightening torques → Anchor.
–  Switch on ignition.
  WARNING
Make sure nobody is in the vehicle when the battery is being connected.
–  Connect battery. For measures required refer to → Electrical system; Rep. gr.27.
–  Observe measures to be taken after connecting the battery → Electrical system; Rep. gr.27.
–  Finally read out fault memory for airbag control unit using → Vehicle diagnostic tester and rectify faults as necessary.
