Removing and installing automatic gearbox control unit -J217-
   
Removing
–  Switch off ignition.
–  Detach rubber seal of plenum chamber cover in direction of -arrow-.
–  Detach plenum chamber cover -1- to front.

–  Use screwdriver to pry off the two caps -3-.
–  Slacken off nuts -4- several turns.
–  Loosen wiper arms -2- one by one from wiper shafts by tilting wiper arms slightly.
–  Unscrew nuts and detach the wiper arms.
  Caution
To prevent the cowl panel trim -5- from breaking when it is removed, apply a small amount of soap solution between the windscreen and the cowl panel trim. Then, starting at the edge of the windscreen, pull the cowl panel trim vertically up and out of the retainer at the windscreen.
–  Pull off retaining clips -1- and detach cowl panel trim -5-.

–  Remove cover for electronics box in plenum chamber -arrows-.

–  Use screwdriver to pry off retaining strap -arrows-.
–  Lay aside engine control unit with connectors attached.
–  Unclip retaining strap for gearbox control unit.
  Note
Only unplug or plug in the connector for the control unit 30 seconds after the ignition has been switched off.

–  Release connector -arrow- and unplug it from gearbox control unit.
  Note
When the connector is disconnected, this resets the adaption values in the gearbox control unit. When it is put back into operation, the control unit has to relearn these adaption values. During this “learning process” the gear change quality may not be as good as usual.
Perform installation in reverse sequence of removal.
