Renewing oil seal for input shaft
t  ATF escaping at the underside of the bell housing may be an indication of leakage at the input shaft oil seal and/or the ATF breather pipe. The actual cause of the leak must be determined before renewing any components.
t  If leaking, the input shaft oil seal must be renewed.
t  The ATF breather pipe must be renewed if leaking → Chapter.
Special tools and workshop equipment required
   
t  Oil seal extractor -T40014-
  W00-1084
t  Thrust piece -T40015-
  W00-1085
Procedure
  Note
t  Observe the general repair instructions → Chapter.
t  Rules for cleanliness when working on the automatic gearbox → Chapter.
l  Gearbox removed
–  Screw oil seal extractor -T40014- into oil seal by hand until tool grips securely in seal. Then tighten the tool using an open-ended wrench.
–  Screwing in the rear bolt of the oil seal extractor will allow you to pull the oil seal out a little.
–  Then re-apply the open-ended wrench so that the oil seal extractor -T40014- firmly engages in the oil seal again and screw in the bolt to further extract the seal.
–  Repeat procedure until oil seal is pulled out all the way.
l  The input shaft must have been installed before the oil seal can be fitted.

–  Lubricate new oil seal -A- with ATF.
–  Carefully slide oil seal onto input shaft with open side facing gearbox (do not touch splines on shaft).
  Note
t  Oil seal can be damaged if it touches splines on input shaft.
t  Push oil seal as far as possible into cover to ensure that it remains straight when driving in.

–  Use thrust piece -T40015- to drive home oil seal.
–  Fill up with ATF → Chapter.
–  After installing gearbox, check and correct ATF level → multitronic 01J, front-wheel drive; Rep. Gr.37, → multitronic 0AN, front-wheel drive; Rep. Gr.37.
