Stress-free alignment of exhaust system
Stress-free alignment of exhaust system
l  The exhaust system must be aligned when it is cool.

Exhaust system without clamp between centre silencer and rear silencer - vehicles with front-wheel drive
–  Loosen bolt connections of front clamp → Item.
–  Push exhaust system towards front of vehicle -arrow- so that rear mounting for rear silencer is preloaded by -a- = 7 ... 11 mm.
–  Tighten bolts for front clamp → Item evenly to 23 Nm (M8) or 40 Nm (M10).
–  Align tailpipes → Anchor.

Exhaust system with clamp between centre silencer and rear silencer - vehicles with front-wheel drive
  Note
On vehicles with clamp fitted between centre silencer and rear silencer, it is also necessary to align the centre silencer.
–  Loosen bolts for front clamp → Item and rear clamp → Item.
–  Push front section of exhaust system towards front of vehicle -arrow-, so that rubber mounting (right-side) for centre silencer is preloaded by -a- = 5 ... 9 mm.
–  Tighten bolts for front clamp → Item evenly to 23 Nm (M8) or 40 Nm (M10).
  A26-0199
–  Push rear section of exhaust system towards front of vehicle -arrow- until rear mounting for rear silencer is preloaded by -a- = 7 ... 11 mm.
–  Align rear silencer so it is horizontal.
–  Tighten bolts for rear clamp → Item evenly to 23 Nm (M8) or 40 Nm (M10).
–  Align tailpipes → Anchor.
  A26-0098
Aligning tailpipes - vehicles with front-wheel drive
–  Check clearance between tailpipes and bumper:
l  Distance -a- is the same on both sides.
l  Dimension -b- = 22 ... 28 mm.
–  If necessary, loosen mounting for rear silencer to adjust the tailpipes.
  A26-0533
Exhaust system without clamps between centre silencer and rear silencer - vehicles with four-wheel drive
–  Loosen bolt connections of front clamp → Item.
–  Push exhaust system towards front of vehicle -arrow- so that rear mountings for rear silencers are preloaded by -a- = 7 ... 11 mm.
–  Tighten bolts for front clamp → Item evenly to 23 Nm (M8) or 40 Nm (M10).
–  Align tailpipes → Anchor.

Exhaust system with clamps between centre silencer and rear silencer - vehicles with four-wheel drive
  Note
On vehicles with clamps fitted between centre silencer and rear silencers, it is also necessary to align the rear silencer.
–  Loosen bolts for front clamp → Item and rear clamps → Item.
  A26-0199
–  Push rear section of exhaust system towards front of vehicle -arrow-, so that mountings (rear) for rear silencers are preloaded by -a- = 7 ... 11 mm.
–  Align rear silencers so they are horizontal.
–  Tighten bolts for rear clamps → Item evenly to 23 Nm (M8) or 40 Nm (M10).
–  Align tailpipes → Anchor.

Aligning tailpipes - vehicles with four-wheel drive
–  Check clearance between tailpipes and bumper on both sides.
l  Dimension -x- (left-side) = dimension -x- (right-side)
  A26-0471
If necessary, correct dimension -x- as follows:
–  Slacken bolt connection -arrow- on brace between exhaust pipes.
–  Adjust the distance between the rear silencers.
–  Tighten bolt connection to 23 Nm.
  A26-0473
–  Check clearance -y- between tailpipes and bumper:
l  Dimension -y- = 34 ... 42 mm.
  Note
Disregard distance -z-.
–  If necessary, check whether the exhaust system is aligned free of stress.
