General notes
Vehicles with gas discharge lamps have automatic headlight range control as standard equipment.
The automatic headlight range control function requires information on the compression and rebound travel at the front and rear suspension.
For this purpose the position of the lower left link in relation to the body is transferred to the vehicle level sender (front, left) -G78- via a coupling rod. This transmits electrical signals to the control unit for headlight range control -J431-.
Control unit for headlight range control -J431- → Rep. Gr.94
On the rear axle, the signals are transmitted to the control unit -J431- by the vehicle level sender -G76-.
These signals are required for calculating the current attitude of the vehicle.
The automatic headlight range control reacts to changes in the suspension height (attitude of the vehicle). Further details on the function of this system can be found in Self Study Programme No. 192.
The following situations may produce a change in the suspension height:
t  Towing a trailer/caravan
t  Different loads (vehicle unladen, partly laden or fully laden)
t  Driving style (fast/slow)
  WARNING
Headlight setting!
The basic headlight setting must always be checked when:
t  Track control link has been removed and installed or renewed,
t  If work has been performed on the vehicle level sender,
t  Vehicle level sender has been renewed,
t  Retaining clip for coupling rod on track control link has been released.
Basic setting of headlights → Rep. Gr.94
