Special tools and workshop equipment required
t  Spring compressor -V.A.G 1752/1-
t  Adapter -V.A.G 1752/9-
t  Rear axle spring retainers (A4) -V.A.G 1752/16-
t  Torque wrench -V.A.G 1331-
   
t  Torque wrench -V.A.G 1332-
Removing
–  Remove wheel trim; on light-alloy wheels, pull off trim cap (use puller in vehicle tool kit).

–  Loosen the flange bolt -arrow- only 90°, otherwise the wheel bearing will be damaged.
  WARNING
The vehicle must be standing on its wheels when loosening and tightening the flange bolt.
-Accident risk-
–  Remove wheel.
–  Screw in and hand-tighten all 5 wheel bolts again.
–  Apply handbrake firmly.
–  Remove flange bolt -arrow-.
–  Remove coil spring → Chapter.

–  Unscrew bolts with washers -2- and detach heat shield.
–  Remove bolts -1-.
–  Lift trapezium link by hand until drive shaft can be detached from flange shaft in gearbox towards front of vehicle.

–  Push exhaust pipe downwards slightly -arrow A- and push drive shaft inwards -arrow B- until it can be removed from wheel hub.
–  Push exhaust pipe downwards slightly again and guide drive shaft outwards over cover plate.

–  Remove drive shaft from below -arrow A-.
  Note
Take care not to damage cover plate -arrow B- or body.
Installing
  Note
Renew bolts and self-locking nuts ⇒ instructions in exploded views from → Chapter onwards.
Installation is carried out in the reverse sequence.
–  Insert drive shaft from below, and push into wheel hub onto stop.
  A42-0283
–  Align bores of drive shaft and flange shaft in gearbox, fit bolts -1- and tighten → Item, (100 mm Ø) or → Item, (108 mm Ø).
–  Install heat shield; fit and tighten bolts with washers -2- → Item.
–  Install coil spring → Chapter.
–  Screw in new flange bolt and tighten to prescribed torque, but do not turn further → Item.
–  Fit and secure wheel → Wheels and tyres; Rep. Gr.44.
–  Lower vehicle onto its wheels.
–  Tighten flange bolt by turning further through specified angle → Item.
