Removing and installing airbag (driver side) with igniter N95 / N250
Removing and installing airbag (driver side) with igniter -N95- / -N250-
Removing
  WARNING
t  Observe safety regulations for pyrotechnic components → Chapter.
t  Observe disposal regulations for pyrotechnic components → Chapter.
–  Move steering wheel down and to rear as far as possible, using full range of steering column adjuster.
–  Switch on ignition.
–  With ignition switched on, disconnect battery earth wire → Electrical system; Rep. gr.27.
   
–  Turn steering wheel so that cap -1- on back of steering wheel is pointing straight upwards (approx. 12 o'clock position).
–  Mask trim (top) for steering column switch module in area of bolted connection of airbag using adhesive tape to protect surfaces from damage.
–  Prise off cap -arrow-.

–  Unscrew bolt -arrow- for airbag (driver side).
–  Turn steering wheel by 180° and repeat procedure on opposite steering wheel side.

–  Return steering wheel to centre position (wheels straight ahead).
  WARNING
Before handling pyrotechnic components (e.g. unplugging the electrical connector) the mechanic must discharge static electricity by briefly touching the door striker plate, or similar.
–  Pull airbag (driver side) slightly away from steering wheel.
–  Pull connector locking element -1- as far as stop -arrow-. This will release electrical connector -2- which can then be unplugged.
–  Equipment version with multi-function and tiptronic steering wheel: Unplug electrical connector -3-.
–  Detach airbag -4-.
  WARNING
Set down airbag with impact cushion facing upwards.
Installing
  WARNING
t  Observe safety regulations for pyrotechnic components → Chapter.
t  Before handling pyrotechnic components (e.g. plugging in the electrical connector) the mechanic must discharge static electricity by briefly touching the door striker plate, or similar.
Installation is carried out in the reverse order; note the following:

t  Make sure electrical connectors are fitted correctly (as far as stop) and engage audibly.
t  Make sure that wiring is not trapped.
–  Connect electrical plug for coil connector to airbag coupling at return ring with slip ring.
–  To secure electrical connector in position, press it into recesses in steering wheel.
–  Position airbag (driver side) in steering wheel.

–  Screw in two bolts -arrow- for attaching airbag (driver side) approx. two turns.
–  Operate horn three times to ensure an even gap width.
–  Avoid further contact with airbag.
–  Tighten bolts -arrow-.
–  Press caps into openings in steering wheel.
  WARNING
The battery must be connected with the ignition switched on. If pyrotechnic components (e.g. airbag or belt tensioner) are inexpertly repaired, this may result in unwanted triggering after connecting the battery. There must not be anyone in the vehicle while you are connecting the battery.
–  With ignition switched on, connect battery earth wire → Electrical system; Rep. gr.27.
–  As a final step, interrogate and erase the event memory of the airbag control unit -J234- as unplugging the electrical connectors may have caused faults to be stored → Vehicle diagnostic tester.
