Removing and installing cover and padding (backrest)
  Note
The procedures described relate to the standard or sports seat (front, with manual or electric adjustment) and the convenience seat (front).
Special tools and workshop equipment required
t  Drill (for vehicles with DVD player)
t  Safety goggles (for vehicles with DVD player)
t  Ø 12 mm drill bit (for vehicles with DVD player)
Removing
  WARNING
t  Observe safety regulations for pyrotechnic components → Chapter.
t  Before handling pyrotechnic components (e.g. unplugging the electrical connector) the mechanic must discharge static electricity by briefly touching the door striker plate, or similar.
–  Remove front seat:
t  Standard seat and sports seat (with manual adjustment) → Chapter „Removing and installing front standard seat (with manual adjustment)“.
t  Standard seat and sports seat (with electric adjustment), and convenience seat → Chapter „Removing and installing front standard seat (with electric adjustment)“.
–  Attach front seat to seat repair stand -VAS 6136- → Chapter.
   
Vehicles with mounting for DVD player:
l  DVD player removed.
–  Unclip trim -2- for electrical connector -arrow-.
  WARNING
Risk of eye injuries.
Wear safety goggles!
–  Use Ø12 mm bit to drill out guides -1- and -3- for DVD player.

  Caution
Danger of damaging backrest cover and padding irreparably.
t  Guides are only held in position in backrest frame by retaining tabs -arrows-.
t  Therefore only drill out up to 35 mm (dimension -a-) to remove.
All vehicles (continued):
–  Remove backrest cover panel:
t  Two-piece backrest cover panel → Chapter „Removing and installing backrest cover panel“
t  One-piece backrest cover panel → Chapter „Removing and installing backrest cover panel“
–  Remove head restraint:
t  → Chapter „Removing and installing head restraint with slide-in locking mechanism“.
t  → Chapter „Removing and installing head restraint (with electric adjustment)“.
–  Remove front seat backrest → Chapter.

–  Disengage bottom fastening strips -5- and -6- at trim for backrest frame -4-.
–  Disengage top fastening strip -3- of cover -1- at backrest frame -2-.

–  Disengage side fastening strips -3- from fasteners of trim for backrest frame -2-.
–  Detach backrest padding far enough so that side airbag can be removed.
–  Remove side airbag → Chapter.
Equipment version with seat with manual adjustment:
–  Disengage hook of side airbag from backrest frame, take airbag downwards out of pouch (stitched to cover) and re-engage in backrest frame.
Equipment version with seat with electric adjustment:
–  Disengage hook of side airbag from backrest frame and leave in pouch (sewn into cover).

All vehicles (continued):
–  On seats with lumbar support (not on convenience seat), detach padding from Velcro fastener -3- on lumbar support -2-; otherwise hooks -arrows- of lumbar support will be damaged during removal.
–  Take cover and padding upwards off backrest frame, at the same time guiding out wiring harness of side airbag.
Installing
  WARNING
t  Observe safety regulations for pyrotechnic components → Chapter.
t  Before handling pyrotechnic components (e.g. plugging in the electrical connector) the mechanic must discharge static electricity by briefly touching the door striker plate, or similar.
Installation is carried out in the reverse order; note the following:
  A72-10720
–  Make sure that fastening strips -3, 5, 6- and side fastening strips lock correctly in place and that cover -1- is not creased.
  Caution
The three centre fastening strips -6- must be hooked over trim for backrest frame -4- and over backrest frame -2-.

Vehicles with mounting for DVD player:
l  Mountings for guides -1- and -3- on backrest must be clean.
–  Align backrest cover and insert guides in mountings.
l  Guides -1- and -3- can only be inserted in one position.
l  Release buttons must face outwards.
–  Clip on trim -2-.
l  Trim can only be clipped on in one position.
  Note
-Arrow- can be disregarded.
All vehicles (continued):
  Note
Make sure electrical connectors are fitted correctly (as far as stop) and engage audibly.
  WARNING
The battery must be connected with the ignition switched on. If pyrotechnic components (e.g. airbag or belt tensioner) are inexpertly repaired, this may result in unwanted triggering after connecting the battery. There must not be anyone in the vehicle while you are connecting the battery.
–  With ignition switched on, connect battery earth wire → Electrical system; Rep. gr.27.
  Note
If the airbag warning lamp -K75- indicates a fault following installation, you must interrogate, erase and then re-interrogate the event memory → Vehicle diagnostic tester.
