Block diagram of air conditioner control motors
  Note
t  As of Model Year 2012 (introduction depending on vehicle model) modified air conditioning units are gradually being introduced (air conditioning unit with part number „8T_ 820 005“). The introduction of these air conditioning units will be accompanied by the installation of different control motors. At present, the different versions of the control motors can be fitted with both air conditioning unit models (combined installation is currently permissible) → Electronic parts catalogue and → "Guided fault-finding" function of vehicle diagnostic, testing and information system VAS 5051.

t  On this vehicle, adaption and actuation of the various control motors (-A- to -N-) at the air conditioning unit are performed by way of a signal wire. The control motors (-A- to -N-) are connected in series via this signal wire (LIN bus) to the air conditioner operating and display unit, Climatronic control unit -J255-. A fault at one control motor or in the wiring can lead to various event recorder entries with different types of fault → "Guided fault-finding" function of vehicle diagnostic, testing and information system VAS 5051 and → Current flow diagrams, Electrical fault finding and Fitting locations.
t  The number of control motors at the air conditioning unit depends on the version of the air conditioner (6 control motors with „Basic“ version and 10 control motors with „Deluxe“ version) → Current flow diagrams, Electrical fault finding and Fitting locations.
t  The sequence of the control motors in the wiring depends on the version of the air conditioner („Basic“ or „Deluxe“) and on the vehicle model (left or right-hand drive) → Current flow diagrams, Electrical fault finding and Fitting locations. On left-hand drive vehicles with an air conditioner of „Deluxe“ type for example, position -A- is the fitting location of the left temperature flap control motor -V158-. On left-hand drive vehicles with an air conditioner of „Basic“ type, position -A- is the fitting location of the temperature flap control motor -V68- → Current flow diagrams, Electrical fault finding and Fitting locations.
The effect of a fault and the type of fault stored in the event recorder differ depending on the operating status or the air conditioner guided fault-finding function in which a specific fault occurs → "Guided fault-finding" function of vehicle diagnostic, testing and information system VAS 5051.
t  In the event of a fault concerning the control motor sequence (two or more connectors or control motors interchanged on installation):
–  These control motors will be incorrectly matched in the basic setting function and the flaps will not be actuated properly (incorrect assignment).
–  Depending on the adjustment range for this control motor, an incorrect end stop will be detected during basic setting and stored as a fault in the event recorder and basic setting will be terminated.
–  The wrong flaps will be moved and the air outflow direction will be incorrect. This is not always detected as a fault depending on the adjustment range of the control motor. All connectors should therefore always be marked before unplugging and basic setting performed after plugging in again.
t  Faults occurring during normal air conditioner operation may lead to the following event recorder entries depending on the type of fault:
–  In the event of a fault in the positive or earth connection to a control motor, this control motor can no longer exchange information with the air conditioner operating and display unit, Climatronic control unit -J255- and the corresponding control motor is stored in the event recorder.
–  In the event of a fault in the signal wire to a control motor (e.g. open circuit in connector to contact „2“ of control motor -B-), this control motor and all the control motors (-C- to -N-) series-connected downstream of this control motor can no longer exchange information with the air conditioner operating and display unit, Climatronic control unit -J255- and the corresponding control motor as well as those connected downstream of it are stored in the event recorder.
–  In the event of a fault in the electronics of a control motor (e.g. in control motor -B-), control motor -B- may, depending on the type of fault, still be able to exchange information with the air conditioner operating and display unit, Climatronic control unit -J255-, but all control motors (-C- to -N-) connected downstream of this control motor are stored in the event recorder.
t  Faults occurring during air conditioner basic setting may lead to the following event recorder entries depending on the type of fault:
–  In the event of a fault in the positive or earth connection to a control motor (e.g. control motor -B-), this control motor cannot exchange information with the air conditioner operating and display unit, Climatronic control unit -J255- and is thus not recognised during basic setting. As all control motors are re-assigned and re-matched during the basic setting function starting from the last control motor -N-, this control motor is missing in the series. The air conditioner operating and display unit, Climatronic control unit -J255- recognises that a control motor is missing and stores the first control motor in the series circuit as being missing (e.g. on left-hand drive vehicles with an air conditioner of „Deluxe“ type, the left temperature flap control motor -V158-). In addition, the fault „Automatic addressing not OK“ is displayed and with certain control motors possibly „Upper or lower limit value exceeded“.
–  In the event of a fault in the signal wire to a control motor (e.g. open circuit in connector to contact „2“ of control motor -C-), this control motor and all the control motors series-connected downstream of this control motor can no longer exchange information with the air conditioner operating and display unit, Climatronic control unit -J255- and these control motors are thus not recognised during basic setting. As all control motors are re-assigned and re-matched during the basic setting function starting from the last control motor -N-, these control motors are missing in the series. The air conditioner operating and display unit, Climatronic control unit -J255- recognises that several control motors are missing (only control motors -B--A- are recognised and incorrectly assigned and matched as being the air flow flap control motor -V71- and the air recirculation flap control motor -V113-). All other control motors (e.g. on left-hand drive vehicles with an air conditioner of „Deluxe“ type from the right footwell flap control motor -V109- to the left temperature flap control motor -V158-) are stored as missing in the event recorder and the fault „Automatic addressing not OK“ is displayed.
–  In the event of a fault in the electronics of a control motor or if a fault occurs during basic setting (e.g. in control motor -C-), this control motor may, depending on the type of fault, still be able to exchange information with the air conditioner operating and display unit, Climatronic control unit -J255-, but is no longer able to exchange data with all the control motors (as far as control motor -N-) connected downstream of it. The air conditioner operating and display unit, Climatronic control unit -J255- recognises that several control motors are missing (only control motors -C- to -A- are incorrectly assigned and matched as being the air recirculation flap control motor -V113-, the air flow flap control motor -V71- and the right footwell flap control motor -V109-). All other control motors (e.g. on left-hand drive vehicles with an air conditioner of „Deluxe“ type from the right centre vent control motor -V111- to the left temperature flap control motor -V158-) are stored as missing in the event recorder and the fault „Automatic addressing not OK“ is displayed.
