Removing and installing selector mechanism Special tools and workshop equipment required

t  Engine and gearbox jack -V.A.G 1383 A-

t  Counterhold tool -T10172- with -T10172/5-

t  Gearbox support -T10337-

t  Puller -T40160-

Removing –  Switch off ignition. –  Remove gear knob with gear lever boot → Chapter. –  Remove air conditioner operating and display unit → Rep. gr.87.

–  Remove multimedia system operating unit -E380- → Rep. gr.91.

–  Remove front ashtray -1- → Rep. gr.68.

–  Remove noise insulation above selector mechanism → Chapter. –  Remove nuts -arrows-.

–  Remove noise insulation (rear) -2- → Rep. gr.66. Vehicles with diesel engine –  In addition, remove noise insulation (front) -1- → Rep. gr.66.

–  Remove bolts -1- and detach torque reaction support from engine.   Note -Items 2 and 3- can be disregarded.

Continued for all vehicles   Note The flexible pipe connection (de-coupling element) in the front exhaust pipe must not be bent more than 10° - otherwise it can be damaged. –  Disconnect exhaust system at clamp(s) -arrows-.

–  Remove bolts -arrows- and detach heat shield for propshaft -1-.

Propshaft with bolted connection at gearbox end: –  Remove securing bolts from connection between propshaft and gearbox (counterhold using counterhold tool -T10172- and -T10172/5-). –  Slide propshaft together towards rear final drive. The constant velocity joints can be moved axially. –  Tie propshaft up to one side. Propshaft with splined connection at gearbox end: –  Remove propshaft → Rear final drive 0BC; Rep. gr.39 or → Rear final drive 0BD; Rep. gr.39.

Continued for all vehicles –  Remove bolts -4- and detach cross piece -3-. –  Remove nuts -1- and detach heat shield -2-.

–  Support gearbox using engine and gearbox jack -V.A.G 1383 A- with gearbox support -T10337- attached. –  Slightly lift gearbox with engine and gearbox jack -V.A.G 1383 A-.   WARNING Risk of accident. Engine and gearbox jack -V.A.G 1383 A- must remain in position when work is being carried out and must not be left unattended.

–  Remove bolts -arrows- for tunnel cross member.

–  Lower gearbox by dimension -a- using engine and gearbox jack -V.A.G 1383 A-. l  Dimension -a- = 80 mm (maximum)

–  Remove bolt -1- for push rod and bolt -3- for connecting rod.   Note -Item 2- can be disregarded.

–  Remove nut -1-.   Note -Item 2- can be disregarded.

Caution Risk of damage to selector shaft in gearbox. t  Do not prise off or knock off the gearbox selector lever -1- with a lever or hammer. t  Always use puller -T40160- when removing the gearbox selector lever. –  Apply puller -T40160- and pull off gearbox selector lever -1-. –  Remove heat shield below selector mechanism → Rep. gr.66. –  Take out selector mechanism towards rear. Installing Installation is carried out in reverse sequence; note the following: l  Tightening torques → Chapter and → Chapter.   Note Always renew seals, gaskets and self-locking nuts. –  Install tunnel cross member → Chapter.

Vehicles with diesel engine –  Push torque reaction support -1- upwards in direction indicated by -arrow- until it makes contact with cross member.   Note Bump stop -2- must be in contact with cross member without play, but must not be under tension. –  Then tighten bolts -3- to specified torque → Rep. gr.10. Continued for all vehicles –  Install heat shield below selector mechanism → Rep. gr.66. –  Install propshaft/bolt propshaft onto gearbox → Rear final drive 0BC; Rep. gr.39 or → Rear final drive 0BD; Rep. gr.39. –  Install exhaust system and perform stress-free alignment → Rep. gr.26. –  Install noise insulation → Rep. gr.66. –  Adjust selector mechanism → Chapter. –  Install multimedia system operating unit -E380- → Rep. gr.91. –  Install air conditioner operating and display unit → Rep. gr.87.
