Removing and installing selector mechanism Special tools and workshop equipment required

t  Engine and gearbox jack -V.A.G 1383 A-

t  Gearbox support -T10337-

t  Puller -T40160-

Removing –  Switch off ignition. –  Remove gear knob with gear lever boot → Chapter. –  Remove air conditioner operating and display unit → Rep. gr.87.

–  Remove multimedia system operating unit -E380- → Rep. gr.91.

–  Remove front ashtray -1- → Rep. gr.68.

–  Remove noise insulation above selector mechanism → Chapter. –  Remove nuts -arrows-.

–  Remove rear noise insulation (loosen fasteners -2- and -3-).

Note The flexible pipe connection (de-coupling element) in the front exhaust pipe must not be bent more than 10° - otherwise it can be damaged. –  Disconnect exhaust system at clamp -arrow-.

–  Support gearbox using engine and gearbox jack -V.A.G 1383 A- with gearbox support -T10337- attached. –  Slightly lift gearbox with engine and gearbox jack -V.A.G 1383 A-.   WARNING Risk of accident. Engine and gearbox jack -V.A.G 1383 A- must remain in position when work is being carried out and must not be left unattended.

–  Remove bolts -arrows- for tunnel cross member.

–  Lower gearbox by dimension -a- using engine and gearbox jack -V.A.G 1383 A-. l  Dimension -a- = 60 mm (maximum)

–  Remove bolt -1- for push rod and bolt -3- for connecting rod.   Note -Item 2- can be disregarded.

–  Remove nut -1-.   Note -Item 2- can be disregarded.

Caution Risk of damage to selector shaft in gearbox. Do not prise off or knock off the gearbox selector lever -1- with a lever or hammer. –  Apply puller -T40160- and pull off gearbox selector lever -1-.

–  If fitted, remove bolts -4- and detach cross piece -3-. –  Remove nuts -1- and detach heat shield -2-. –  Take out selector mechanism towards rear. Installing Installation is carried out in reverse sequence; note the following: Tightening torques → Chapter and → Chapter   Note Always renew seals, gaskets and self-locking nuts. –  Install tunnel cross member → Chapter. –  Install exhaust system and perform stress-free alignment → Rep. gr.26. –  Install rear noise insulation → Rep. gr.66. –  Adjust selector mechanism → Chapter. –  Install multimedia system operating unit -E380- → Rep. gr.91. –  Install air conditioner operating and display unit → Rep. gr.87.
