Final drive, differential, differential lock > < Determining preload of tapered roller bearings for spur gear drive input gear
Re-determining preload of ball bearings for centre differential
Re-determining preload of ball bearings for centre differential
This adjustment is necessary when the following components are renewed:
t  Gearbox cover
t  Spur gear drive input gear
t  Spacer sleeve
t  Centre differential
Special tools and workshop equipment required

t  Press tool -VW 432-
  W00-0143
t  Thrust plate -VW 447 H-
  W00-0053
t  Straightedge -T 40100-
t  Digital depth gauge (e.g. -VAS 6087-)
l  Tapered roller bearing outer race for spur gear drive input gear is installed in gearbox cover.
l  Spur gear drive input gear, spacer sleeve and centre differential installed.
  W00-10297
–  Position straightedge -T40100- onto cleaned joint surface of gearbox cover.
–  Using digital depth gauge -1- (e.g. digital depth gauge -VAS 6087-), measure depth between ball bearing -2- and straightedge.
  Note
To prevent the centre differential from tilting during the measurement, fit the tools VW 447 H and VW 432.
In example: measurement -a- = 142.45 mm.
–  Add the height of straightedge -T 40100- to this measurement.
  A35-10215
Example:
Depth as measured with digital depth gauge (measurement -a-)142.45 mm
+Height of straightedge -T 40100-39.70 mm
=Measuring range (overall dimension)182.15 mm

Select required shim from table → Anchor.
