Check preload of ball bearing according to wear pattern on mounting bracket -arrow-.
  Note
t  It is only necessary to check preload of ball bearing for flange shaft (left-side) on certain vehicles; for list of vehicles see table → Anchor.
t  This measure is not required on later vehicles because of a design change.
l  Flange shaft (left-side) must be removed → Chapter.

Wear pattern „A“
l  Slight impressions in vicinity of hole in mounting bracket -arrows-.
l  No trace of scoring or material worn down around circumference.
–  Optimise preload of ball bearing for flange shaft (left-side) → Chapter.

Wear pattern „B“
l  Scoring and possibly material worn down around circumference of hole in mounting bracket -arrow-.
–  Adjust preload of bearing for flange shaft (left-side) → Chapter.
–  Renew mounting bracket, ball bearing and circlip → Chapter.
