Torque Converter: Removal and Replacement

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
‹› Extractor (T40176)
‹› Depth gauge
‹› Automatic transmission clean working conditions, refer to => [ Clean Working Conditions ] See: Service Precautions/Clean Working Conditions.
‹› General repair instructions, refer to => [ General Repair Information ] See: Service Precautions/General Repair Information.
‹› Lightly coat shaft seals with ATF. Other types of lubrication lead to faults in the transmission hydraulics.
Removing
‹› Transmission removed.

Secure the transmission on the assembly stand. Refer to => [ Transmission, Securing to Assembly Stand ] See: Service and Repair/Removal and
Replacement/09EA Transmission/Transmission, Securing to Assembly Stand.

Remove the left flange shaft. Refer to => [ Left Flange Shaft ] See: Front Final Drive, Automatic Transaxle/Differential Output Shaft/Service and
Repair/Left Flange Shaft.

Remove the - nut - from the (T40176).

Install the (T40176) with the extension (T40176/1) in a threaded opening on the torque converter and tighten by hand.

Remove the torque converter carefully without tilting it.
Installing
Install in reverse order, paying attention to the following:

Always clean the torque converter bell housing in the area where the differential is accessed - arrow A - and the shaft seal - arrow B -.
