Compressor Pulley: Service and Repair
Belt Pulley - Version 1, Removing and Installing From Compressor
Compressor Pulley
‹› A belt pulley is installed on compressors in a vehicle with 6 cyl. engine (compressor is driven via a shaft in vehicles with 8 cyl. engine).
‹› Different versions of the pulley are installed, depending on compressor construction type and engine version
Belt Pulley - Version 1, Removing and Installing from Compressor
‹› If overload safeguard of pulley triggers, check compressor for ease of motion before replacing the pulley, replace it completely if compressor
moves with resistance.
‹› The function of overload protection for pulley is described in e.g. 240Audi A2 technical.
‹› To remove belt pulley, it depends on engine version if it is necessary to remove compressor from engine => [ Compressor Bracket ] See: Service
and Repair/Compressor Bracket.
‹› Currently, compressor with belt pulley version "1" is installed in vehicles with 6 cyl. diesel engine.
‹› The compressor can be removed and installed at the bracket without opening the refrigerant lines => [ Compressor Bracket ] See: Service and
Repair/Compressor Bracket.
‹› Mark direction of rotation of ribbed belt using chalk or felt-tip marker before removing. Reversing the direction of rotation of a run-in belt can
destroy the belt.
‹› Depending on engine and country version, different compressors are installed (6 or 8 cyl. engine, gasoline or diesel engine).
-
Remove noise insulation
-
Release tension on ribbed belt and remove it.
-
If necessary, remove power steering pump (6 cyl. gasoline engine only)
‹› Belt pulley is made of plastic and is sensitive to impact, therefore handle it with especial care
‹› If overload safeguard of drive plate - C - has triggered, drive plate can be pried off from belt pulley - D - after removing circlip - A -
‹› Depending on production time period, drive plates with 3 holes (as shown) or one outer hex head on the front side are installed.
‹› A plastic disc - B - may be glued on or a circlip with a rubber disc vulcanized on to it may be installed on drive plate of belt pulley - A - to
optimize noise reduction. This plastic or rubber disc - B - can reduce a clapping (castanet-like) noise which occurs especially at belt pulley in
vehicles with Diesel engine in A/C system operating mode " Econ" (the noise is almost inaudible with A/C system operating at full output).
