Replacing timing chain (N40)
Special tools required:
•
11 5 120
•
11 5 140
•
11 9 190
•
11 9 280
•
11 9 330
Necessary preliminary tasks:
•
Remove intake filter housing with air-mass flow sensor.
•
Remove ignition coils.
•
Remove all spark plugs.
•
Remove cylinder head.
•
Remove alternator drive belt.
•
Remove vibration damper.
•
Secure engine in installation position.
•
Lower front axle support.
•
Remove oil sump (not for E87 and E90).
•
After removing oil sump, provisionally reinstall front axle
support and remove special tool for securing engine in
installation position.
Important!
For removal of the timing chain, the central bolt must be
slackened and later removed.
After the central bolt (1) is released, the sprocket wheels of
the timing chain and the oil pump will no longer be non-
positively connected to the crankshaft (risk of damage).
Balancing shafts rotate and must be readjusted as described
later.
