Fully automatic soft-top (hood) 

E36 Convertible

Situation: 

In May 96, new locking units with modified thread pitch entered series production for the
fully-automatic convertible top - E36 convertible. The reduced thread lead with the new
version considerably reduces the closing forces and consequently improves the level of
closing comfort. The opening and closing times increased slightly as a result of this
measure.

Action: 

Before carrying out repairs to the closing units, check the production date of the vehicle.
(Dates before May 96 are fitted with the old version.) The part numbers of the closing units
remain unchanged. The Central Parts Warehouse in Dingolfing now stocks only the new
closing units.

Procedure:

When replacing old closing units with new ones, you must make sure that the two closing
units on vehicles manufactured before May 96 are replaced only as a pair. If they are not
replaced as a pair, the soft-top will close unevenly due to the different thread leads.
