Exchange wiper rubber

Situation:
From the start of series production, the E46 was equipped with a wind-
screen wiper on which the wiper rubber was caulked with a spring rail integrated in the
innermost claw 1 on the inside of the wiper blade
(see Fig. 1).

Effect:
It is not possible to exchange the wiper rubber separately.
Affected
vehicles:
E46/4, E46/2 and E46/3. Manufacturing period: start of series production to September
1999.
Action:
From September, windscreen wipers have been gradually introduced to series production
on which the wiper rubber can be exchanged individually, as on all the other BMW vehicles.
Procedure:
To replace the windscreen wiper rubber:
Remove the windscreen wiper blade from the wiper arm. Please refer to Repair
Instructions 61 61 041 or to the Owner's Handbook under the heading "Changing the wiper
blades".
Removing worn wiper rubber
1.
Grasp the worn wiper rubber with multi-purpose pliers on the side on which the claw
bites into the wiper rubber pocket (do not bend the claw open or damage it in any
other manner).
2.
Squeeze the spring rails embedded in the wiper rubber together with the multi-purpose
pliers and pull it out of the windscreen wiper blade claw complete with the wiper rubber
(see Fig. 2).
