Software errors in navigation system

E39, E38, E46 with option 606/609

Complaint: 

The following errors may occur sporadically or permanently with the navigation system or
when operating functions by means of the on-board monitor or the radio navigation control
panel:

1.  Sporadic ejection of the map CD

2.  "Navigation" menu option can sometimes not be selected
3.  "Frozen" position symbol in the map

4.  Distance reading in the on-board computer menu not always 

right justified

5.  Incorrect memory setting of the DSP after ignition ON
6.  Timer 1 and Timer 2 swapped over

7.  Sporadic lack of audio tone until first navigation instruction

8.  When outside temperature is 0

C, the on-board monitor reads "Ä"

9.  Implausible guidance instructions

The customer complaints described above do not arise with all variants of navigation
system. The necessary actions, however, are not identical for all variants affected.
None of the complaints described above are, however, valid reasons for exchanging the
navigation computer.
Software errors that have already been able to be eliminated in an earlier version of the
operating software are not mentioned in this Service Information bulletin. You can find a list

Cause: 

Software errors in the operating system for the graphics component of the navigation
computer or for the navigation computer itself. 

See enclosure.

Affected
vehicles:

E38, E39, E39 with navigation system (option 609) or 
E46 with radio navigation (option 606)
Production date: since start of series production

Procedure:

In case of customer complaint, compare and examine the explanatory notes in the
enclosure.

If it is possible to remedy the error in the navigation system variant affected by updating the
operating software, carry it out.
The current version of the operating system (V 11) is available from 
March 1999.
If no remedy is described here for the error in the navigation system variant affected, one
will be found and published at a later date. You must then inform the customer of the
situation.
