Motorola V50 mobile phone: Notes on use

E38, E39, E46, E53 with complete basic fittings for Motorola V-series mobile phone
(option 632)

Situation:

1.

Notes on using Motorola V50 mobile phone

Compared to the Motorola V3690, the Motorola V50 can be recognised by the letters
"WAP" under the keypad when the display is folded open. 

BMW Service will only consider Motorola V50 units with BMW software:

A Motorola V50 with BMW software can be recognised as such by the letters "BMW"
appearing on the initial screen when the unit is opened and switched on. 

A Motorola V50 without BMW software, in other words without the "BMW" initial screen, is 
not approved for use in conjunction with a vehicle. If such units are operated in conjunction
with a vehicle, communications may be interrupted, the unit may switch off unexpectedly
and the battery may become discharged if the unit is left connected to the vehicle while it is
parked.

Complaints concerning Motorola V50 units without BMW software are of no relevance to
BMW and cannot be processed by BMW Service.

Special features that may be encountered when using a Motorola V50 with BMW-
specific software in conjunction with a vehicle:

If operated using the multi-function steering wheel, the phone number displayed
on the multi-information display may, in isolated cases, not be dialled.

In isolated cases, it could happen that a call cannot be started via the multi-
function steering wheel.

In isolated cases, it could happen that a call cannot be ended via the multi-
function steering wheel.

-

If an SMS text message is read on the mobile phone and the mobile phone is
then placed in its connector in the vehicle, the SMS cannot be erased on the on-
board monitor or on the multi-information display.

If "BMW ASSIST" is active and the Motorola V50 is switched on and then
disconnected from the vehicle, an "ASSIST" SMS may be stored on the SIM card.
This SMS will be shown in a format that cannot be read.

If the mobile phone is switched on and then connected to the vehicle, a "soft
reset" may be made. The display will darken. After approx. 10 seconds the
telephone will then automatically go into normal "switched on" mode.

These special features are exactly the same as those encountered with the Motorola
V3690 mobile phone with BMW-specific software.

Affected
vehicles:

E38, E39, E46, E53 with complete basic fittings for Motorola V-series mobile phone
(option 632) or basic equipment for installation of mobile phone (option 640) in
conjunction with a Motorola V50 mobile phone purchased on the open market. 

Manufacturing period: E38, E39, E46 from June 2000; 
E53 from September 2000
