1.0 Introduction
Market analyses show that the modern-day customer places far higher demands on his vehicle than was the case in
the past. He wishes to own a vehicle specially tailored to his personal requirements.
Consistent technical development of individual electronic systems in the vehicle, and in particular the ever-increasing
degree of networking of electronic systems give the customer the possibility, for the first time in the E46, to select his
own individual setting for a multitude of electronically controlled functions and to have the vehicle programmed to
meet his requirements.
The "Car and Key Memory" program opens up new possibilities in customer service for the BMW dealer organisation.
BMW views the "Car and Key Memory" not only as an advantage over the competition, but also as a possible means
of increasing the customer's loyalty to the BMW marque and with it to his dealer.
This BMW Technical bulletin is intended as basic information for the dealership which should give a general overview
of the "Car and Key Memory".
The "Car and Key Memory" programs are integrated into the BMW Diagnosis CD-ROM and will be delivered for the
first time with the Diagnosis CD-ROM V13 in April 1998. "Car and Key Memory" settings are made in the BMW
dealership using the BMW diagnosis systems DIS and the new MoDiC.
At present, the "Car and Key Memory" program is only available for the E46. Expansion to include the E38 and E39 is
currently being prepared and is expected to be launched in late 1998.
2.0 Recommendation
The "Car and Key Memory" program opens up new perspectives for both the dealer and the customer in the BMW
dealer organisation. This however requires the sales, service, workshop and warranty departments of the dealerships
to have the same level of information.
The customer should be professionally familiarised with the "Car and Key Memory" right from the sales discussion.
The salesman should document the settings the customer requires to allow these requirements to be realised for the
delivery inspection.
"Car and Key Memory" settings are in principle subject to charge. The initial setting within the delivery inspection, and
one subsequent correction should be offered as a service. Cost pertaining to subsequent settings are at the dealer's
discretion.
The following flat rates for the "Car and Key Memory" have been computed as a uniform basis and for internal
calculation of labour costs:
For setting up to 5 functions: 4 FRUs, FRU number: 61 00 050
For each additional 5 settings: 1 FRU, FRU number: 61 00 560

Settings in the "Car and Key Memory" do not constitute the rectification of technical defects and do not therefore
qualify for warranty reimbursement.
