Checking/adjusting balancing shaft backlash
(M43TU)
Remove oil sump,
refer to 11 13 000.
Rotate engine at central bolt in direction of rotation until
piston (1 and 4) is at TDC position.
Note:
For the purposes of assigning the balancing shafts, it does not
matter whether the engine is at overlap or firing TDC.
Attach special tool 11 6 250 and measure axial clearance of
balancing shafts (1 and 2).
Axial clearance (wear limit),
refer to Technical Data.
Note:
If wear limit is exceeded, replace balancing shaft housing.
Measure backlash at balancing shaft (1) with special
tool 11 6 250.
Align stylus of dial gauge so that it is parallel to centerline of
balancing shaft (1) and tooth flanks.
During backlash measurement, gently push balancing shaft (1)
forward so that the axial clearance does not distort the
measurement.
Note down backlash.
